A regulnr meeting of tho Borough Council was held Inst evening, but only a few of the Councilmen wcro present, most of them being In attendance nt the Republican mass meeting. An application to have an arc electric light placed at the Greek Catholic church on West Centre street was referred to committee. Complaint was made by Mrs. Flnnegnn that on account of Improper dralnnge at tho corner of Gilbert and Centre streets wnter flowed over her garden. This com plaint, with one nbout a culvert at tho extreme end of West Coal Btreet, was referred to committee. The finance committee reported that Receiver of Taxes Scanlan had paid $10,000 Into tho borough treasury. The survey committee was Instructed to look after the complaints nbout grades of South Pear alley and tho alley between Chestnut nnd Gilbert streets. Mr. Gnfllgan reported that bids of $200, $275 and $205 had been made for the im provement of the Borough Council base ment. Council took no notion. Contractor McAdam submitted an esti mate of $S,C00 for work done nt the Fowler's Hun nnd Brandonvllle reservoirs during the pnst month. Council decided not to pay tho bill until Mr. McAdnm furnished the $5,000 bond required of him nnd furnished an itemized statement of the work done at tho Brandonvllle reser voir. Llngham & Mbrrls, who bid $2,&10 for building the engine nnd boiler house nt Brandonvllle, have thrown up tho con tract, Tho secretary was Instructed to hnve a meeting of the water committee held to night and notify nil bidders to hand in sealed proposals at the meeting. A petition of residents of East Coal street regarding a sewer was referred to the Banitary committee. The committee on room and stationery was Instructed to advertise for bids for coal to be used In the Borough building. STRUCK BY A TRAIN. A Hungarian Dies From Injuries Sus tained This Morning. Andrew Snroko, a Hungarian, 35 years of age, was struck by an east-bound miners' train on the Lehigh Valley rail road, at the foot of West street, nt about six o'clock this morning, while on his way to work In the mines. Tho crew of the trnin stated that the man became bewildered and stepped in front of the train. The train wns stopped and the crew took tho injured mnn to the Lehigh Val ley depot. He was subsequently sent to the Miners' Hospltnl but died on tho way. His skull was badly fractured and his back broken. The body was sent back hero on the nine o'clock Lehigh Valley train. It remained unclaimed at the depot for several hours. Soroko lived with his wife on "the rocks" until last Saturday, when they moved to the First ward, and the recent change of residence caused some trouble in locating the widow. Tho poor woman was prostrated when In formed of her husband's death. All the time bis body lay in the depot she sup posed her husband was at work in the mines. The couple bad no children. PERSONAL.
