It being the first pay-day under yie full time schedule it was expected the town would be very lively Saturday night, but there was a disappointment. Two stood at the corner of Main and Centre streets frjm about six o'clock until nearly mid night, making their seductive oilers of a dollar's worth of goods for ten cents, and caught many fishes. The iirst street disturbance occurred yesterday when an electric car stopped on Kast Centre street and aconductoreiected a Hungarian who had behaved himself m a disorderly manner on tne car. A law suit has grown out of the occurrence and will be heard before Justice Toomey to night. The Hungarian claims the motor man, Howard Medlar, struck him in the fac" without cauie. A second disturbance occurred on East Centre street this mornine, in front of Justice Toomey's office. Harry Wertz, the young painter who received slight injuries in a fall from a building In town several months ago, this morning made an unpremeditated acro batic tumble that, but for his cat-like agility, would have resulted In serious injury. Wertz was engaged In painting the side of a house occupied by Edward Welsh, in Brownsville. He stood upon a rope-suspended scaffold above the second story. The wind blew hard and the scallold swung away from the building. Wertz lost his balance and fell several feet. twisting In such a way as to grasp the window sill. Cries of help at tracted several men toAthe breach, but as the victim was some distance from the bank of the breach and none of the would-be rescuers could swim he sank to the bottom. Several men made reneated dives for the body without success and the water was dragged with the same result until midnight. Uhey lenrned that four Khamo kin men were peddling in and about Mt. Cnrmel without a license. They took possession of tho packs and carried them to , Cormel, supposing the owners would follow and pay the fines to recover the property. The peddlers did not materialize, but hied themselves to Shaniokin and caused warrants to be Issued for the oflicers on charges of highway robbery. It is claimed the packs contained ?400 worth of goods. In their charge the peddler declare thnt the offenders 'uped revolvers In securing possession of their goods and committed an assault upon them. It Is claimed they did not try to place them under arrest, being content with seizing their goods at the point ot revolvers, The peddlers allege that the oflicers were not armed with warrants for their arrest. v hot the outcome of the case may be cannot be safely predicted. It Is claimed that the police refused to settle the case when settlement was suggested by the peddlers, believing the last action was brought in order to still further evade the law and obviate the necessity of the peddlers paying the fines and costs that would necessarily accrue.
