Probably no more magnificent, yet torrlfyinif, spectaelo lias ever lieen witnessed this slile of the At lantic It whs ionic after dnrk Inst iitulit When belated people returning from work to their homos in tho southern snlmrlis along tho elevated road noticed constantly enlarging columns of lire and smoke ns- cemlltig skyward in the east. Hundred. of spectators hurried from the trains Into the celebrated court of honor. There, suddenly, the conllngrntlon came into full view. Whirlwinds of blazing embers were be ing curried from the end of the court of honor furthest from the Administration building high over the mammoth roof of the Liberal Arts building, the largest structure 011 earth. The fire had been burning less than an hour when n thun derous crash of falling timber and a tremendous shout from tho crowd an nounced the collnpse of the Peristyle. A moment later another terrific yell from the crowd told that the Liberal Arts building had caught lire nml that the whole exposition was threatened. A dramatic incident marked the des truction of the Peristyle. One of the lad ders upon which was a group of firemen, fell with the columns, and one of the heroic fire lighters went down to death while a number of others suffered injuries more or less severe. The fire started In the Casino, just east of the Agricultural building and south of the Peristyle. The Casino was ijnickly de stroyed, and the names surged north on top of the Peristyle, and dropping, mmlo a second Hue of lira along the linso of the columns. The lliimos then sprang through the Music hall. While tho lire was burning there was one of the most singular and fascinating sights of thetughl. Along the top of the Peristyle were score's of statutes. The spectacle for those people fortunate enough to be on tho moving sidewalk Just east of tho Peristyle was of a success ion of gigantic human beings plunging one after another headlong into the lake below. The origin of thiS lire is said to be re venge on the-part of a couple of tramps. The solitary guard in tho Music hall says that just before tho Humes broke out lie kicked two vagabonds out of the Music hall and told them to find epiarters else where. They left in the direction of Ilia Casino. Directly after tho fire broke out, and soon everything on the grounds was in terror and confusion. 1-Vars of looting added to the horror of the scene. At 10 o'clock, with a possible loss of about 1 ,000,000 by lire in thu Jinn- , ufactures buildhnr alone, the authorities I began to realize a lnrge element in tho 1 crowd was composed 01 idlers who would ' be hard to control.
