Hard times are not peculiar to the United States at this juncture. Hard times prevail nearly the world over. It is not easy to understand why this should be the case, but it is, and es pecially in the large eltief. In our own country New York, Boston, Phila delphia, Baltimore, and other lire cities, are all the centres of a great amount of suffering anion;; the work ing classes. This is painfully Illus trated in Philadelphia, though possibly to a less extent than In some others, Chicago and New York for Instance. In the first-named city destitution is fearfully prevalent. Thousands of those who flocked to that city and found employment there during the preparations for, and while the World's Fair was in full play, have suddenly found themselves in desperate straits. There Is no work lot them and ths number of Impecun ious unemployed is so great that?thn sympathies ot the well-to-do are taxed to an exhausting extent. New York, according to Dr, Parkhuret, is little better off. The.papers of that city are clamoring for funds wherewith to re lieve the immediate wants of tiie sullerlng multitudes. Iu a word, the generally prevailing distress will de mand during the coming winter aid of of whatever kind the better pro vided classes are able to furnish, and in largequautltles. It should not be regarded us unrea sonable that the atlluent should he more economical in their expenditures, furnish their tables less luxuriously, dress less expensively, and make a general curtailment In expenses iu or der to enable them to contribute more liberally to the funds for the relief of those who are appealing In every di rection for the absolute necewaarles of life. Suoli sacrifices would not be very severe. They would lu fact be hardly felt, but the savings In expenditure, applied ai suggested, Mould carry Joy to the heart of thousands upon thou sand i. Tiik merchants, uiauufuoturers and people at large wilt remember the prosperity they have enjoyed for years and will keep asking the caute of present hard times. The country was never richer. IU granaries and store houses are full. Why are the work shop and the furnace and the diversi fied manufacturing establishment closed? Who ha? stopped the.wheeh and put out the furnace fires? Tun great army of the unemployed workingmeu In the country will learn with unalloyed satisfaction that the Way aud Means committee in revlt- iug tbeir tariff schemes have cut down the duty on out diamonds fron 111 to 10 par oent. Iolk money atill accumulates, and still upsets the reasoning of the crauk.--vv'ho insist that cheap money maktt business. CARLISLffSjiLi l)AY. Ho Domands tho Eesignation of Twonty-four Officials. Nkw YortK. Dec. IB. Tho defense of Dr. Henry C. F. Meyer began this morning, the prosecution having completed tho first step of their case yesterday. There was nothing remarkable lu tho testimony of the experts offered, lioth sides hope to make points from the evidence, which is almost entirely confined to expression of tiplnion by Dr. fleorgol'eabody, of Coluui- ia college, and Professor Horntio A Wood, of the University of Pennsylvania. The hypothetical question in which all Hie facts obtained lroui the witness . Mul- ler as to the Illness and death of Drandt, alias Ilanni, together with the findings of Professor Doremiis, was concluded by Mr. Nlcoll as follows: "Tills description of the Illness and death of the patient being true, what, in your opinion, was the cause of death!"" .Mr. Hrooke, who never lets a legal point escape him, objected to this question on the ground that it was based wholly mi the testimony of the accomplice, uncor roborated and that the law forbade the conviction of an accused person upon the uncorroborated testimony of an accom plice. Ho declared, that while the testi mony of Mullcr as to the existence of a conspiracy to defraud the Insurance com panies was corroborated, Hint part of Ins story regarding the sickness aud death of lirandt was wholly uncorroborated. Justice llarrett overruled the objection and Dr. Pen body replied: "In my opinion tho causoof death was tine to tiie poisons found by the chemists In the viscera of tho dead man." Cross examining, Dr. O'Hulllvan asked questions suggesting that lirandt had been an arsenic cater for a long period be fore his death. Tills opened up n new line of defense, for if it can be established that lirandt took arsenic habitually, as many people do, it would account for tho "saturation" ot his body with that posion the con dition described by Professor Doremiis. Professor wood, like Dr. Peabody, said that in his judgment, assuming the al leged facts to be true, the cause of Ilrnndt's death was poisoning by the ad- nlnistration of some form ot antimony and arsenic.
