And now lie gets his feet iu the trough again. We all know what monkey business is, and shall eoou know what monkey talk is. Prof. Garnier, who a year or so ago gave some illustrations of it, gathered from moukoys kept in cngei, and who went to Africa to learn it iu its purity from the monkeys enjoying their native liberty, reached Liverpool last week on his return, and said that his mifslon was a great success. If Garnier is right the missing link is as good ns found. Hut here n ' suspicion arises Cau he In bis enthusiasm have deceiV' ed himself and, so to speak, put words In the mouths of the monkeys? WILL TBEAT ONLY WITH EMPLOYES rhe SiMikssman of the Orternnee Com mittee stays the Controversy Is on n Matter or Principle, nnd Intimates That There Mny he n Fight, PmLADKLPlHA, &or. 18. President Wil bur, of the Lehigh Valley, baa thrown sown tbe gauntlet to the men who are trying to adjust the differences lietween the company and its employes. He re fuses to confer with them upon the ground thnt the memliers of the committee are not employes of the Lehigh Valley rail road, and that he will deal directly, with the employes, and no one else. For more than a month the grievance committee have been in Bessiou in Bethlehem and Philadelphia discussing tho complaints of the company and trying to bring about a conference with the railroad magnates. letters were addressed to Acting Manager Voorhecs, but to only one of tbem did he vouchsafe any reply. This was in answer to a communication from the .committee dated Nov. 0, and in his reply Mr. Voor hees flatly refused to meet thememberaof tbe committee upon the same ground as that now taken by President Wilbur. Finding thnt to remain In Bethlehem was useless the members of the grievance com mittee came to this city, and for the past week have been in conference at the Bing ham house. The result of tills conference was a letter to I'rcsldent Wilbur, which was handed to him nu Monday night, with a request for an immediate answer. This letter recited the grievances of Che men,' and concludes with the following appeal: We are In possession of the feelings of the men by their own expression over their own signatures, and In order to show that all reasonable steps have been taken to amicably adjust the differences which exist, and to continue the friendly relations which have heretofore existed, we make a linal appeal to you, as the president of the Lehigh Valley Hallrond company, to grant us an interview at your convenience, for the purpose, If pos sible, of tnking up their differences for adjustment." This letter was signed by A. B. Young- sou, of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers; A. D. Thurston, Order of Hail road Trainmen; John E. K. llannnhan, Locomotive Pireinen; C. II. Wllkins, Or der of Hallrond Clerks, and S. D. Wilkin son, of the Brotherhood of Hailwny Tele graphers, Last evening I'rosidont Wilbur sent the following reply: Hie interviews referred to as having been had duriug June and July Inst were with the officers of the Philadelphia and Heading Hallrond company, which at that time was the lessee of our road. Tho pol icy of the management of tho Lehigh Val ley Hallrond company has always been to deal directly and only with its employes. I am familiar with tho replies made by tho general superintendent and the acting general manager to applications for inter views. They meet my approval, and aro hereby confirmed." It is understood that the position taken by President Wilbur and General Man ager Voorhoes Is the same as that as sumed by the latter during the strike on the New lork Central railroad when Mr. Voorhees was in control there. At that time Pourtu Vice President Webb nnd Mr. Voorhees declined to confer with any person not .actually In tho employ of the New York Central riroad. Mr. Voor hees is believed to bo opened to labor or ganizations in general, and his antipathy to labor lenders is well known. When President Wilbur's letter was re ceived an informal consultation was held at the Bingham House among the labor officials who represent the employes. C. II. Wilkin, of Chicago, of the Order of Haili-oad Clerks, who is spokesman for the body, in answer to questions regard ing the contents of tho letter and the prob able action that would be taken upon it, said: "Inasmuch as President Wilbur evi dently receded from the position he took in August, there aro only two tilings for us to do either accept the situation ns it exists or tight. Will wo fight Well, that Is a question that tho men must answer for themselves. In a vote recently taken among the 1,810 employes of the Lehigh Valley rood, 1,715 of them voted to do a certnin thing. While we cannot order a strike, and while there is not one cent of money at stake, it would bo prematura to say what will be done.
