Theltepubllean party of this county Hturtt'd tlilByearon the right course and everything geemed to bo In Its fnvor, All dlsseiiBloiiH of the past teemed burled and a new leaf was turned over, resulting in tho nomination of an ex ceptionally strong ticket with a back ing which eeeuied to Insure the elec' tton of the major portion of the candi dates with good chance for a sweeping victory. The schemers aud mud-dog criers were taken In on probation, they promising to behave themselves. Har mony was the cry on every side, and one and all declared that tho hard times and threatened attack on the tarlll laws had rekindled tho love for tho principles of the grand old paity and they were ready to battle against the false promises of tho Democratic hosts. Everything looked bright, the lions aud the Iambs were In the same fold, and to many the only question unsolved was tho majority by which the whole Republican county ticket would be elected next November. But a change has come. When the dls organizers thought eveiything was serene and they had ellectually cover ed themselves with the sheep's cloth ing, they crawled from their lairs and prepared themselves to steal a march on tho loyal members of the party The result Is a breach, and unless steps are taken in the right direction atonce that breach will widen to such an ex tent that the whole Republican county ticket will be engulfed by defeat This Is a warning that should be heed ed. The exposure of ;the Pattison Iteilly Republicans and their littio plot should open the eyes of the true Republicans and they should see who the true fiieuds of the party are. There should be no factions in the party this year, and there would have been none had the old conspirators kept quiet aud redetmcd their promi ses of good behavior by working for and preparing to vote for the whole Republican ticket. By digging a pit for a part of it they make a chaem for the whole. One of the gravest mistakes Chair man Whitehouse could have made was tle alteration of the Executive Committee. His action was abso lutely unnecessary, and ithas insulted the members of the First, Second and Third districts. The first fruitsofthe mistake Is the resignation from the eotmulttee of Thomas Toeh, of the ' First district. It i clear that the conspirator have overall ot the mark. Tlity blundered when they recommended the geutle 2tiHu from Bhenaudoah n an addi tional member of the committee; they must have known that a member of the Executive Committee niuat alto be a member of the county committee. To-day the conveutltu of Republi can clube of this state meet at Reading. It will be a notable gathering, at which many of the leader, both state and national, will be present aud make addresses. This meetlug will sound the first gun of the campaign that will last until the Republicans again con trol the country. We have every rea son to believe that the meeting will be both a noted and harmonious one. Yesterday a regular riot was caused in St. 1'auli, a suburb of the city, by the attempts of the authorities there to enforce the sanitary ordinances, and dur ing tho fighting a policeman was killed, It appears that the people In one of tho poorer districts of St. I'auli have long com plained to one another of what thoy claimed to be the interference of the au thorities with their way of living, and when the health oluclals further interfered to enforce cleanliness, tlierowas troubloat once. The health ofllcials were accom panied by several policemen, but tho latter were powerless to prevent the crowd that had quickly gathered from attempting to drive tho party out of tho street. Stones were thrown, and some of tho ofllcials were quito badly bruised. During the melee one of tlio rioters was arrested, whereupon tho mob turned their entire attention to the police, and at tempted to rescuo tho prisoner. Thocrowd made a determined rush upon the olllcer who had hold of tho prisoner, knocked him down, nnd then trampled upon and kicked him with their heavy wooden shoes. The situation of the official party was crit ical, and word was hastily sent for mili tary aid. In tho mcantimo tho police and health ofllcials wcro lighting for their lives.
