Tho ox press en gine was evidently further off tho trnck than the remainder of tho train, nnd when It Btruck tho freight engine. It was thrown to one side and the tender torn from It. The engineer, upon fooling the englno leaving the track shut oil the steam, whistled for brakes, ami ho and tho flie man Jumped. Tho latter, Charles Willis, ruptured a blood vessel and was badly bruised. Ho was takon to a hospital. Tho engineer cscapod with very slight Injuries. Fred Holland, engineer, had his skull frac tured at the base and was out over tho cyn. It Is thought that ho will recover. No one else on tho freight was hurt. There wero about n dozen persons In tho smoking car, and nearly all escaped In jury. Day coach No. 71 was filled with passengers, every seat being ocoupied. Nearly all tho casualties occurred In this oar. It swayed to one side and struck tlio projecting end of a box car standing on a side track. Tho cntiro side of No. 71 was ripped off, and tho end nearest to tho smoker was smashed. All thoso who were killed were on that side of tho car. Walter M. Derard, assessor of Highland Falls, was the only passenger In this car who escaped Injury. Ho said that he oc cupied a sent behind threo women. Across tho aisle were several ladles and children. He noticed llttlo If any shock when tho air ran over tho switch. The crash came after the train had gone several yards on tho sldo track. Thero was a lull for a mo ment, then everything becamo a sceno 6f tho wildest confusion, and tho air was filled with tho cries and groans of tho wounded. Tho seat occupied by Mr. BorarU was broked Into pieces, but ho oicapeu as dj a miracle. The parlor car's trucks wero.broken. but the passengers, except for being heverely shaken up, were not Injured. Tho po lice and physicians of Nowburgh were notified, and about a dozen of tho latter hurried to the sceno and began caring for tho wounded: The following were killed: Mrs. Eliza Klemm, wifo 'of Antoino Klemm, of Highland Falls, N. Y. A 2-year-old child, daughter of Burn ham Klberson, of Hetnukct, L. I. Hor parents wero botli injured. Iloso Hellly, who lived as a cook with n famllr at West Park, and was Identified by Mr. Smith, her omploycr. Mrs. Paulino Wright, of Brooklyn, mother of Mrs. Michael, who, with (,ov cral of hor children, wero injured. An unknown woman, apparently about 31 years old, of Hebrew cast of counte nance Sho had open faced gold watch and chain, turquoise enr drops, and woro a blue calico dress, with white (.tripes. F.ighteen people received serious Injuries and n number wero slightly hurt. Thoso whoso wounds nro likely to prove fatal are: Miss Jane J. Cooke, of Catsklll, head cut and Injured internnlly; C. G. Slstalre, about 80 years old, Internal Injuries. Twenty-ono of the wounded wero taken to St. Luke's hospital, this city, where the surgical stall Is affording all posslblo re lief. The nurses are assisted by a number pf ladies and gentlemen from Newburgh. Coroner Corwin empanelled a jury.which looked over the ground ut the wreck and adjourned until J o'clock this evening.
