As a mournful kind of net-off to IU, numerous and brilliant pln of pleasure Paris la now dcatlned to lmvo a aeries of odlflcea called palaces of death. These pnlaia de la mort, or as they are also styled, palais rnortualres, are intended for the reception of dead bodies until the arrangements for In terment hare been fully completed. Tho object of the members of the or gaiTlzins; committee of the death palaces to twofold. In the first place, they desire to prevent hasty or prema ture burials, as It often happens In Prance that people are put Into the Brave alive; seoondly, by the new method the danger of contagion would be minimized. Nothing is snld about attaching eleo- trlo wires to the waists of dead per sona temporarily deposited In these mortuaries, ns is done In some German olties, notably Munioh, the purpose of this arrangement being to arouse the attendant dootor should the supposed departed be only in a trance. In Paris the bodies. In the event of douut as to death, would be kept until the first trace of decomposition appeared. The oommittee of organization lm been founded by Dr. Bergeron, who Is aided by a hygienic specialist, M. Alar- tin. These gentlemen have already forty thousand pounds on hand, and are only waiting the authorization of tho new muniolpal council in order to begin building. The first mortuary will bo established In an old closed churchyard near the Montmartre cem- etery. and special departments for the various olasscs of tho community wtu be arranged. Tho project Is strongly backed, and has every prospect of be ing practically carried out. BOUNTYJUMPERS OF ALL KINDS One Ohio Man Halted Crown 80 as to Se cure Fay for Their Heads. "Bounty grabbors aro over existent and ever will be, I guoss," said Grimner Abbott, a traveling man, ton Gloue Domoorat roporter. ' "I'eople will be crooked and practice deception in everything, so that nothing can be dono now without first laying plans to Kiiard against deception. Look at the bounties offered for the heads of cer tain pests in the different parts of the world. In Russia n ruble is paid by the government for the head of every wolf killed. In India a certain sum ia paid for the bodies of the dead cobras, In Australia a shilling is given, in oer- taln districts, for the head of rabbits In New York, Chicago and other big cities of the world, a few pennies are paid for tho heads of sparrows, and so on the worlu over. in ovcry ono 01 these cases certain persons have been caught defrauding the govornmont. Instead of going out and endeavoring to rid the country of tho pests and so making a living, thoso brilliant schemers have turned into raising the peBts and selling their heads, finding it inoro profitable) to do so. In my ter ritory southeastern Ohio crows be came so numerous that they destroyed most Of tho grain. A bounty of ton ..ni, xTrna r.tVT-fl -fm- fbpli- linnrln nnd n; number of people started into tho crow- f L .. . killing business. One Uocoptlve genius down there saw a quicker way to make money. This individual started an In- dustrinlenterprise that threatened for awhile to revolutionize the crow busi ness and mako him wealthy. His plan was to socuro an incubator and raise crows by thnt system. Some one dis covered tho sohemo and tho bounty was abolished entirely." The Huail Family, Thero aro over two thousand species of snails and they are found In all parts of tho world. Somo are even smaller than a pin head, while others, In France nnd Italy, for instance, are cul tivated for food and are large enough to make a good mouthful. Snails ni-e vegetarians, and have jaws and tongue of saw-like edge, the number of points on each running into tho thousands. On tho npproach of cold weather the snail throws n film over tho moutn 01 its shell, which tightens like a drum head. As it becomes colder, other Alms are added on tho plan of storm windows. Extensive drought will cause the snail to close Its doors in tho same way to prevent the evaporation of its bodilv moisture and drying up. Those little animals are possessed of nston- ishinar vitality, regaining activity after havinsr been frozen in solid blocks oi Ice. and enduring a degree of heat for weeks which dally crisps vegetation. Above tho Clouds. One of the sublimest effects In natnrt is occasionally seen by those who climb the tall and isolated peaks of the itocky mountains in Colorado. The drynesf- of the air and tho strong heat of the afternoon sun cause a rapid evapora tion from tho brooks, springs and snow hanks on the mountain sides, und this moisturo, rising on the warmer air, condenses ns it reaches the cooler. thinner atmosphere about' tho moun tain top. The traveler, looking down, sees clouds literally forming below him, and growing thiok nnd black every instant, so that as they reached his level they roll r,ky ward and in huge masses of vapor thiit eclipse the view and bury him in narknesa.
