Tho itomeW ThotniM Hnnt, with crowded eUttarnton barge on either aide of her, crnshed into th. tug Unit and two schooners in tbe eddy off ElBCkwell't Island when tho flood ttile) was strongest. One schooner was snnk so qnlokly that the captain tuid crew had barely time to launch a boat and put off from her. Tbers was s panic on the bnrfres, which carried the annual exoursion party of tbe 8t. Nichols Roman Catholic cbarcfa, in East Second street, but the DOisfnaers es caped Injury. Tho weight and slie of the barges, the Vanderbilt aud the Stephen Walker, aaved them. The excursion ints. of whom there were over 1,000, hud started from Thlnl street for Grand View, L. I. The Unit. C'imtfliii Mcelum. with the two schooners, I)e of 1'tnes anil Kllu Krancia, both laden with eemetit, wan moving up the west channel. As the town rounded the eud of Black well's Inland, olT tlm Astoria ferry, the Hunt blew oiiu signal whistle, lutonnlng Capta)n Meelian Hint she would cross the Unit's bow. As Meehan answered it, the Hunt sheered across. In a moment she was heading directly at the Unit. Mee han reversed his euginea, but the tow was heavy and the tide was strong. Collision was inevitable and tha Unit blew a 'series of alarm whistles, warning the Hum's captain that she was helpless. The alarm whistle tokl the excursionists what they had already feared, and as the Vanderbilt neared the Isle of Pines the alarm became panlo. The party was largely made up of women and children, and though Father Mayer aud other priests on board did what they could to quiet tbem there was terrible confusion. The Vanderbilt struck tbe Isle of IMnes with terrific force, cuttiug the schooner's starboard bow down to the water's edge. The schooner's bowsprit was smashed against the barge's bull. Happily the schooner was so low that the bowsprit .itrtirk the Vanderbilt below har guard. Had it been longer, or hod the schooner been light, her jibbon would have cut through the barge's joiner work and loss of life would probably have resulted, The Vanderbiit's passengers bad already begun A stampede toward the Hunt, tbe women and children shrieking iu terror. On the Hunt It was little better, for there the distribution of life preservers had been Ingun. and this necessary precaution in ci-eaged rather than diminished the fright of the passengers. Two women fainted, but bs it soon became evident that the barges were almost uninjured, quiet tvns rostored. 'lbe Isle of Pines was already sinking, Cnptuin Meehan, of the V nit, had cast off the schooner's lines to prevent her from carrying tbe tug and the Francis to the bottom. t'sptnin Legg, who owns the Isle of Pine, was in his cabin ill with malaria when the collisiou occurred, but he rushed on deck, where his mother, his wife and her three children were awaiting rescue, llio i.apUUn and three men launched about nuil put tbe women and children into it iu t twinkle. Before they had rowed half a down strokes the schooner pitched and w cut down head foremost, her topmasts aloim remaining above the surface.. fl e Unit picked up Captain Legg, his family and crew, and lauded them at Hell ijnte Light. The Huut, after standing by until Captain Legg had lieeu rescued, pro ct'i ded to Grand View with her passengers. The Unit towed her Frauds to Hullett's 1 oint.
