Mo Kennn, n priest nttnehed to St. Ann's church, In Knst Twelfth street, ' and Mrs Slnry Rurchell, his cousin, whose home wits In l'lttsburg, Pa., wero drowned In tin Hudson nt the foot of West Ono Hundred and First street. It was at tho end of a day's pleasure. They had been rowing and had returned to the llloonilngilaie Doat Club house. Sirs. Ilurchell had left tho boat nnd stood upon tho flout. Site dropped n glove and in stooping to recover it stepped upon the boat's gtiuwnlo. The boat tipped and Father Mclvenna and Mrs. Burchell wero thrown Into tho water. Tho priest swam to save tho womnn. Sho seized him nnd they sank together, re-appearing 100 feet .iway as the ebb oarrietl them out. Help camo n moment later, but it was too lute then. The priest's strength had been overtaxed. They sank together. Airs, ilurchell was married only two months ngo to Charles Ilurchell, of Pitts burg. Bho came to this olty ten days ago to visit tho father of the man who died in attempting to rescue her. The priest's father, Hugh McKcnnn, lives in the Boulo- aru, between Une Hundred and Twentieth aud One Hundred and Twenty-Ilrst streets. Tho young priest borrowed a boat from ills younger brother to give Mrs. Burchell a row on the Hudson. They started at 2 o'clock from the lloat of tho Blooming dale boat club, at tho foot of Ono Hundred and First street. They readied the club bouse again at 6. As the boat camo along side tho lloat Mrs. Burchell got out, leav ing her companion In the stern. He had left the oars and was busy in the stem with his buck toward her. In attempting to recover n glove which had fallen Sirs. Burchell stepped oil the float and hei weight tipped the boat so far that sho lost her balance and fell overboard. Father SlcKennn fell from the other side of the boat at the same moment and both sank. The priest soon regained tho float, but as he griispml it ha saw his cousin rise to the surface and be turned hack to her res cue. Two or three members of the club were on the second floor of the boat house nt the tinip, but they did not hear the alarm uu til it was too late. The tide set out strongly, and before Father McICeuua had readied the drown ing woman both were quite a dlstn.no from the float. She threw her arms nbotl him and tncy both snnk. The wonmn was dead weight and her grasp bumpered the reocuer's arms. A they came .to tho sutfnee again he hud freed nnu of his anna. He raised it and shouted for help. George Copeland, who was in the club house, heard the cry, but he was up stulrs. and before he could reach the float the iticiigth ot tho swimmer was exh.iustcd aud both had sunk. James Elliot, a boy who witnessed the accident from the shore, told Policeman Enright about it, and tho policeman re covered the boat. Sirs, Burchell was the daughter of a Pittsburg manufacturer named Uurtey She has a sister in the Dominican Convent. Father Mclvenna was 20 years old. He was graduated from Manhattan College. When but a boy h rescued his sister and two younger brothers from a burning house in Madison stieet. For his heroism two medals were given to him, lis was admitted to holy orders last year. Father SlcKenna was a practised swim mer, and it is supposed that the strength of tho ebb tide against which he struggled nccounts for the fact that he was able to support his companion for so short a time. The bodies have bsen recovered, Geueral Alger Speaks, New York, Juno 17. General Russell A. Alger, of Ailchigan, arrived in the city yesterday, tils visit has no political slg nlllcaucc.
