COUNTY 8UPBRINTBKDBNT. Wttlitu a very short Hum it will lie necessary to elect a Superlntenrieut nf l'ublio Instruction for Schuylkill ooiility. For several years past the publto schools of tills county have been making oomraendable progr, popular Interest In them ban Increased, cltlnens liave increased their visits to the school rooms and attendances at the annual lnstlutes, director) have given evidence of u lietter apprecia tion and more, thorough unders. mul ing of their duties, aud the teachers have become completely devoted in their glorious work. All these good results have been derived to a great extent through the voluntary acts of the people and the directors and teachers, but taey are also due to a great extent to the able administra tions of the district aud county super Intendents. So far as the Shenan doah district Is concerned we are confident that at no time has the district been iu better condition than It is to-day. Thus we feel it !h due to the untiring efforts of Superinten dent Freemau and also the sound judgment, wise counsel aud ableeflorts of Couuty Superintendent Weiss. Mr. Weiss will be urged to again become a candidate for re-election to the county superintendency and we sincerely hope he will do so. There may be others in the couuty fully qualified as wellasMr. Weiss to fill the position, put we adhere to the theory that there should he few experiments in school matters and when we havo tried a evperlntendent aud find bo gives universal satisfaction, as Mr. Weiss certainly does, we should hold on u him as long as we can. It is safe to any that If the teachers of Schuylkill county were called upou to decide the approaching election Mr. Weiss would be re-elected by a unanimous vote. Many people wno should Jrom absolute necessity make economy it ruling feature, are afraid to do so lost they should lose caste with their friends aud acquaintances. It is Imply cowardice that prompts such a feeling, and if thoe who look on in amazement at the torture to which these social cowards subject them selves In ooDsequenoe of their lack of courage to appear In their true colors, they would mete out to them pity as veil as contempt. It ued to be that mine disasters were of much more frequent occurrence In America, than in Europe. We have still a more than ample abun dance, but within a few yeurs Europe has fairly squalled us in that unenvi able particular. A cable from London states that yesterday two hundred miners were entombed in a limning mine near Pont-y-Prldd, Wales. The details of this great calamity are Mhooking In the extreme. There is no reason for the hope that any of the imprisoned men will be rescued alive. Immense factories for the manu ffeeture of materials for worships have sprung into existence under the policy of restoring the American navy. One of the incidental misfortunes of Democratic legislation is the proba bllity of these factories closing down because of the failure of the last C-jngress to nuke adequate provisions for continuing the werk. The act relating to costs in criminal prosecutions, limitinc the amouut to be al lowed on separate bills of Indictment in any one prosecution, passed second read mit. The act designating general election days as legal nulf holidays met with considerable opposition, but its friends kept the breath of life in it long enough to drag it over the third reading line. Another fee bill was passed which regu lates the amount to be paid for filing pe titions for the adoption of miuors. Strang to say the act for the establish ment and government of a state naval mi litia was postponed for the present, its author not being present. The act to amend tbs common school law so as to enable boroughs not divided into wards for school purposes, to establish and maintain public schools, had bard sledding for awhile, being postponed once, but it was afterwards taken up and passed, The act authorizing the appointment by the State board of agriculture of an agent to be known as dairy and food commis sioner, wbo shall inspect dairy products, caused a ripple of excitement when oalled up.
