Miss Emily l'ortor, who was confined to
the house with a severe attack of sickness, is.

Mrs. J. J. Laughlin, who for tho last week
visited friends In Ashland, returned home on
Saturday.
Henry Herskowicli, coal inspector at
Centralia colliery, spent Sunday in Mt.
Carinel.
Miss Julia Gauglian, who for the past fow
months was tho guebt of friends in the city of
Brotherly Love, returned on Friday.
Tho fair for the benefit of St. Ignatius'
church, which was to open on Wednesday, is
postponed until April 10th.
Election day is fast approaching and every
day busy politicians are to bo seen circulat
ing through all parts of town, each striving
to gain advantiigo over the other.
We are glad to seo so much interest taken
in tlie contest which tlie proprietors of this
popular paper ha3 be- n good enough to make
And wo are also glad to seo the good show
ing of our former townslady, Miss Burns.
Every person who gets this paper should get
tho coupons and cast them for their favorite
teacher.
Work on the new railroad, to be run to Mid
Valley colliery No. 2, is being pushed rapidly
to completion. About 100 hands are em
ployed. Jinny more will be added when
tho weather provoa more favorable.
It is rumored that tho electric road will
roach town about July ltt. It is already as
far as Ashland and wo hope it will not be
long before Centralia will also bo included.
The charter is grouted, so now all that re
mains to be done is to soe that it is put into
operation.

Tho exhibits which the public schools of
this town will make at the World's Fair are
complete aud Superintendent Freeman lias
packed them in boxes and forwarded them
to the State Commis'douers at Harrisburg
who will have them forwarded to the
National Committee at an -arly date,
If tho nowspapcis of the country devote
any spiuo to tho educational display at tho
fair the Shenandoah exhibit will occupy
some of it, for it is ceitainly a splendid one
Some of the papers aro really grand in exe
cution aud those who have examined them
feci certain that they will be among the
exhibits to receive the honor of special
mention.
The exhibits number between 2,1500 and
3,000 and have been completed at tho patient
expense of much time and labor on tho part
of teachers and pupils. Supesintendont
Freeman has also expended much care and
time in properly classifying aud packing
them, so that tlie Commissioners will have
little trouble to make a proper display. They
iuclude map drawing from the Third and
Fuurth grade primary and First aud Second
grade grammar schools; arithmetic from all
grades except the High School; language
from all the primary schools except the First
grade; and all tho other schools have two
subjects each, language and arithmetic. The
papers of the High School cover natural
philosophy, which embraces many excellent
pen and ink drawings suitable to tho subject;
latin, trigonometry, algebra, mental philoso
phy and chemistry.
Mr. Woolsoy. of Scranton, the arbitrator
selected by thn fire insurance companies, and
Josiah W. Johnson, of town, the arbitrator
for the School Board, spent Saturday view-
ing the damago done by the recent fire in
the High school building. It is understood
that the conference between the two gentle
men was of a very harmonious character and
tho report they will submit to the School
Bo.ud is likely to be of such a character that
all concerned will be satisfied.
The School Board will hold its regular
monthly meeting on Wednesday evening,
