Lewis 5 AugusU Mjnrs, AstiUnd 4 Frank Williams William N. Ehrhart - 1 Totsl - i 1,W The IIkhai.d's teachers' contest had an other boom and the host record of tho week In nceipt of votes wbb mado. Tho ballots sent In ywterday aggregated 5M, which is tar uli end of the next best duy s receipts, mid 2-14 of them wmt to MUs Connelly, rein stating the lady In first position and giving her n lead of 173 over Miss Burns, who led In the contest yesterday. The rate betneen Mises Connelly and Hums is becoming exceedingly interesting and It looks as if thoir respcctlvo friend uro working night and day in ihelr behaif. The vim already exhibited lias run the total poll of votis up to nearly 1,800 and it would not he surprising to see tho 2,000 mark reached by Mouday night. Miss Carrio Faust, who was one o( tho late entries, makes an excellent showing and holds third place. Thero were four new entries yesterday Misses O'Connell and Stack, Mr. Lewis and Mr. Williams, making tho total number of contestants to date nineteen. Aconipanying the votes sent in for Mr. Williams was the following letter: ( ormsT EmTon: Enclosed And few rotes for Frank VMIlUins, Si.n ot ex-' urge s D. J. "llliama. ir ttiere Is a deo.vin teacucr north r the Hrcd Mountain, It Is Mr. WIU luuis. He Is a cripple. Olre turn a fair chm co. UKowI1 Shenandoah, Jun Id, 1M3. We are acquainted with Mr. Williams and know him to be a deserving young man, but this can in no way help him if his friends do not turn in and for his interests. As to Ills chances, they are the same as all others who may wish to en'er the contest and he will bo tried as all others. No partiality will be shown any one and nothing will be done that will give any contestant an unfair advantage over another. The plan of the contest and tho method by which it is being carried out is such that will convince any one after a moment's investigation that all contestants must meet with fair play. Tho following letter was also received: .Mil Euitoii : Hinco the opcnln of your contest, int rest has become urou-ed to a fever hent thr ughout the town. Syndic ies have been organized for the purpose of pui chasing und cutting votes. As two teacheru will bo cent, according to contract, many of tbo voters d sire to have the nam- s of two contestants on each b Hot T is being a fcupgesilon which I think will be favorably received byoladintiers of the co trstams, I respectfully subm t it fur uur eonslueraiioi.. Uuping that It will bo favorably recelvtd ami actid upon, 1 remain Very hospecilully, J J. Mohagiiaw. This is tho second suggestion of tho kind made within the past two weeks. We havo not had time to give to a satisfactory con sideration of the question, but as we view it at present we cannot coincide with tho views of the correspondent. One featuro that at onco strikes us as unfavorable presents itself when we consider the proposition in con nection with tho present table of returns. Would it not result in an overpowering com bination, reduce the contestants to a very limited number and practically destroy the foundation of the competition fair play to all. For instance, had it been allowablo to place two names on each ballot thus far in the contest the combined vote for Misses Connelly and Burns would bo to-day 675, while the combined vote of the next two highest teachers would be but lG7,orovcr500 behind. Now suppose wo alter tho conditions of the contest and allow two names to be pl-iced upon each coupon, and the Connelly and Burns forces should combine, is it not very piobable that wo would bring upon our heads the wrath of tho thus far less fortunato contestants in tho Hold. It is right that any two would havo a right to put in as mauy votes as the two in tbo supposed cafe, but tho managers of tho contest do not think they are warranted in doing anything that would seem to throw a shadow of advautugo in favor of any one. Moreover, ail the conditions of tho contest were fully advertised for two weeks before It opeiHxl and we fear the suggestions come too late. We feel grateful to Mr. Monaghan for the interest he is taking in the contest and fully appreciate his desire to help us conduct it successfully. While we cannot now see our way clear to adopt his suggestion we do not intend to let our present decision of the question be final. If we can be convinced that we have a right to make the change and our views of the matter are not oorreot the decision will be subject to a reversal, but be fore changing our position we would first expect to have the views of the majority of the contestants in the field. They are the patties who would be affected by the change, not us. As additional evidence of the interest that It being taken in the contest, Holderman, the Jeweler, offers a liandsome gold -neck lacs to the teacher who will have the most votes at the close of the contest.
