TJCJLY FIRE PROMPTLY PLACED UNDER CONTROL. Tho Bulldlnff Waa Principally Damaged by Wutor Sovoral Rooms Will bo Unfit for Uao for Somo Tlmo. HEREwasa blaze at the High- School building last night that at one time threatened, tho structuie with destruc tion. Tho alarm brought out tho three fire companies, anil tho Columbia Hose Com pany was obliged to take out tho two firo engines. Tho alarm wrfs sounded when an immense volunio of smoko poured forth from tho southeast corner of tho building. When tho firemen reached tho scene tho walls and ceiling of the High Schoul room on the top floor wero hot. The unt of trouble was located in tho chimney in tho southeast comer of tho room and it was evident that tho woodwork in tho walls and ceiling had been smouldering for days. Tho "Shenan doah" englno was placed at tho plug corner of Mnln and Lloyd streets and the "Colum bia" was located at tho plug orucr of Main and Coal streets. All lines of hose of both companies were connected and all streams wcio turned into openings mado to drown the hidden flames. Notwithstanding tho immense amount of wntcr poured into tho place tho south side of tho building broko out in a blaze, but this outbreak was speedily overcome, and the firemen again turned their attention to inside work, tapping tho water laden ceiling and giving tho roum a thorough drenching. After constant work extending over two hours and a half tho firemen succeeded in placing tho building beyond all danger. When the School Directors found that the lire was under control they met in special session in ono of tho north rooms on tho first floor of tho building to take actiou on suggestion for arranging school accomnioda iionspfudiiK tho repairing of tho damaged rooms? Superintendent Frecmanyr.is present and stated that he had already madeariange inents to liiro Franey's hall and tho board endorsed his action. The board ulfo decided to leave all tho arrangement of the schools in ths hands of tM superintendent und com mittee on buildings. The damage done by fire and water will reach about $!1,000, which is fully covered by insurance, the building being insured for $10,000. It will tako some timo to put the damaged section of tho building in good con dition again. Tho ceilings and walls of four of the rooms will need considerable repairing and tho High School n thorough overhauling. Tho cause of tho firo was a defect in tho chimney at tho southeast corner of the build ing, and it will quite likely ho necetsary to tear down and rebuild tho chimney. The efficiency of tho fire department was demonstrated last night. When tho fireman located tho source of trouble and started work they did excellent servico Had tho firo got boyong their control the effect would hao been disastrous in that section of tho town as all the buildings about the High School structure are frumo and would have been easily caught up by a blaze. Joseph Wyatt, proprietor of ono of tho hotels at the corner of Main and Coal streets, did royal servico for tho fireman in furnish ing them with an abundanco of hot coffee and eatables. Ilia hospitality was enjoyed with a telish. A .Second Alarm. When tho firemen wero engaged at the firo in the High School building last evening an alarm of fire was sounded from the First ward. Firo Marshal Early arrauged his forces so that detachments from tho two hoso companies could respond to tho second alarm and yet leave n sufficient forco at the fire then in band. The detachments started for tho First ward, but when half way there learned that their services wcre.not required aud re turned to tho High School building. Tho second alarm was caused by n volume of smoko and steam rushing from a house oc cupied by a Hungarian family at tho oast end of Centre street. Something that was cook ing on a stove boiled over and tho rush of smoko and steam Into tho street when tho door was opened caused a boy to cry, "Firo !" I'oulck's Discourse Sunday Kveiiln?. The sermon in tho 51. K. church on Sun day evening was on "Neglecting Salvation." ilebrens 2-2 3: "If tho word spoken by angels proved steadfast aud every trans gression and disobediouee received a just recompense of reward, how shall wo oscapo if we neglect so groat salvation which was I'll st spoken by the Lord." The comparison here mado is between the revelation of duty and priilego that was mado by Clod, who "spake in timo past unto tho fathers by the prophets" and tho richer revelation Ho has mado through "His son whom He hath ap pointed heir of all things." Qod upheld tho honor of His law under an inferior dispensa tion. When Korah, Dathun and Abiram rebelled against the authority of Moses, tho vico-gereut of God, tho earth cponed her mouth aud swallowed them. When Nadab and Abihu offered strango firo upon tho altar in contempt of God's order there went out firo from the Lord and devoured them. When tho curious inhabi tants of Beth-Shemesh pecrld into tho sacred ark in defiance of God's law, Ho smote fifty thousand of them, And when Uzzah put forth his hand to steady it'he fell dead upon the spot. Thus the word spoken by angels proved steadfast. Thoso who doubt tho doctrine of future punishment will find it no less difficult to reconcile theso iiidubitiblo facts of sacred history with their notions of God's goodness. Tho fact is Ho gavo the world a few specimen exhibitions of his determination to uphold the honor of His law, whether spoken by an gels or men. And the argument of tho toxt 1, if God is careful to honor tho word of angels and to uphold its majesty, how much more will He viudicato the word of His own Son? And if He is so careful to enforce His will concerning what appears to men to be such paltry affairs as the touching of tho ark, or looking on it, or offering strange fire, how much moro may Hebe relied upon to euforco His word concerning tho salvation of the gospel, which touches the highest interests of the soul throughout eternal ages. This salvation is great because God isgreat. It partakes of his own Infinity. It was secured for us by tho sacrifice of hlx Son, When God wanted to create worlds "he spake and it was done, ho commanded and it stood fast," When it comes to upholding what he has made It requires but " the word of His power." When he desired to raise the dead he had but to stand at the mouth of the grave nud ory, "Laurue, come forth I" But when bo would raise the spiritual dead he mutt " roll up his sleeves ;" he make bare his holy arm; the sun hide his face ; mighty earthquakes rend the reeks and opeu the touiul; the veil of the temple rendu, and the awful tragedy culminates in the death of heaven's choicest treasure. Truly, " Twos great to speak a world from naught, Twas greater to ledeem " Again, it is because the tMuaforoiatlous it effects in human character are great. Ue Is able to save to the uttermost all thtaoine unto God by Hum. Earth otters hHre towleot oharecteM. Men mutt possess the quallttss that win or lose In the conflicts of life. But it is the orowntng glory of this Holiday Trip ! ,. o .. final c unt and aunouace the names of tho two on the highest number of votes, the judges will names or tne teachers voted tor. great salvation that it presents its richest prizes to all who will accept them. It lays 1 8 hand beneath tho besotted wretch nh wallows in tho gutter and llflB him up, nud, if he will, exalts him to a child of God and an heir of heaven. How thou shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation 1 Wo need not despi6o it, nor trnmplo on it. Wo need but neglect it and our damnation is sure. A man has but to neglect his business to destroy it. Ho need not blow his brains out to commit suicide: 'el him negloct to tako food and the work will soonbodono. Ho need not get drunk and boat his wifo to destroy domestic bappines ; just let him neglect her nothing stings like neglect. So there is nothing that exhibits tho deep, dark, datnnabio depravity of tho human heart so much as its neglect of this 'great salvation." Stand up aud answer, "How shall wo escape if we neglect so great salvation?" At the close of tho sermon several poisons presented themselves at tho altar 'or prayer and wero converted. There is considerable disappointment among Democratic attorneys that P. M. Dunn, Esq., did not get the Democratic County Chairmanship.
