CROSS' SENTENCE COMMUTED.
1'rasldeut Harrison Interferes In the Case
of tho Cuiuleiiiued Murderer.
Washington, Jan. 6. In tho case of
William Douglass Cross, tho colored
wife murderer, who has been twice con
victed of murder, and live or six times
sentenced to be hanged at different peri
ods, the execution of the sentence in
each caso being postponed because of
pending appeals, the President uas nnauy
ordered u commutation of the sentence to
imprisonment for life.
Cross was to have been hanged to-day
in the jail between the hours of 8 and 12.
The warden's invitation to tho execution
had beon sent out. and everything was in
-radiuess at the jail except adjusting the
rope upon tho gallows.
Vetoed the Appropriation Kill.

has transmitted to the City Council his
veto of bill appropriating $l,200,C30 to

Six Now Typhus Ciihcj.
Vew York. Jan. 0. There were six
new typhus cases yesterday including
that'of John W. llenry, the colored lad
who'waa classed the day before as a sus
pect. This makes a total of 90 cases since
Dec. 1. It is considered encouraging that
the disease showed itself la only three
new places yesterday.

JJossenberger was found guilty of murder
ing Wm. Knuck. Yesterday Otto
Sohultels, Knuck's nephew, confessed to
murdering Knuck.
Murphy Again Indorsed.
Fosua, N. Y.. Jan. . The Montgom
ery County Democratic committee lias
adopted resolutions indorsing the candi
dacy of Edward Murphy, jr., for United
Statu Senator,
against the Antl Option bill I' or nearly
threo hours ho held the undivided atten
tion of the supporters and opponents ot
the measure whilo ho stated tho constitu
tional objections, which, In his opinion,
precluded the possibility of its passage by
the Senate.
The bill has gono over till Monday
next, to day and to-morrow having been
set apart for the consideration of the two
bills in relation to quarantine and Immi
gration. The second general appropriation bill
to pass tho House this session was tho
Fortification Appropriation bill, and it
went through without amendment or t ho
slightest debate.
Mr. Ilrcckinridgc, of Kentucky, had it
in charge, and he steered the craft into
port without meotlng with any adverse
wind.

10:30 o'clock last night in a largo brick
building on Fayette streot butween Dtu
and 10th street occupied by tho Collins
Cigar company, and before the ilames
could be subdued tho structuro was en
tirely destroyed, together with throe
five-story buildings and n residence on
l'enn avenue.
The bulldidgs destroyed wero occuplod
by I. Duff & Sons, commission merchants;
Davitt & Pollock, lamps nud fancy Im
ported goods, llooth & Flynn, contractors,
and numerous offices.
Tlie loss can not bo definitely stated,
but it is estimated anywhere from a
quarter to u half million dollars.
Senator Kennu's Condition.

residence of Senator Kenna, of West Vir
ginia, that lie passed a goad night, and
his condition is better this morning than
it was yesterday, although tho Senutor
has not regained tho ground ho lost from
his rolnpse of ten days ago.

As the result of an explosion of gun
powder In Providence, E. I., Antolu and
Henry, children of Charles Stono, will die.
One ot thu children dropped a lighted
match in a can of gunpowder.
Gottlieb Laupno, a member ot the
Econouiite Society and onu ot the Board
of Elders, is dead at Economy, Pa. His
death reduces the membership to 31.

schooner Edith Berwiml, for Baltimore,
which was wrecked on Smith's Island
shoals on Sunday last, has arrived here.
Chief Mate Johnson, in describing tht
horrors on tho Berwlnd, says:
"Wo struck tho shoals during a gale of
wind, at .'! o'clock Sunday nftcrnoou.
Tho schooner began to fill immediately
and worked herself into five fathoms of
wator, where she sank in two hours.
"We launched tho lifeboat, but the sea
was running high and it " was soon cap
sized. Two man were rescued with grout
difficulty.
"When the schooner Bank we were all
compelled to take to the forerlgging. Sho
settled until thero was six feet of water
on Iter decks.
"The weather was extremely cold and
dreary, und we remained In our positions
in tho rigging from 0 o'clock Sunday oven
Ing until 10 o'clock Monday morning.
"The sea would have washed us all
away had wo not been strongly lnshed.
"The engineer, Charles Ilines, during
tho night became Insane from his suffer
ings and released himself from his lash

had not gono down more than two feet
when thu sen washed him away.

cumbing to bis sufferings, whilo most of
the seamen were becoming senseless from
the cold.

mo 1 attracted her attention with it but

"Shortly afterward a tug came near us,
but seeing n schooner making for the
capes sho left us to our fate and took tlie
schooner in tow.
"The people at tho LIfo Saving Station
nt Smith's Island all the time were watch
ing us, but the sea was so rough they
could not reach us. Finally after a des
perate effort and a hard pull of nino miles
in the surging sea, tho llfo boat In com
mand of Captain George Hltchous reached
us.
"The work of Capt. Ilitchcns and his
crew cannot ho spoken of too strongly.
To save us these men walked right Into
tho jaws of death.
"The most of us were In pretty bad
shape when wo landed. Our clothes
were stiff with Ice nnd lack of food,
together with the, strain we wore put
through, left us in a half dying condi

of theDanbury Medical Society at the
Turner House, about 3 o'clock yesterdny
morning.
Ho left the banquet tnble for a few
minutes and was found on the steps lead
ing from the room. Ho died in about fivo
minutes.
Dr. Young was nbont 55 years of ago,
had been a practicing physician here for
over twenty years, was President of the
Fairfield County Medical Society aud
Bridgeport Medical Socitty.
He leaves a widow and son. His wifo
Mary B. Young Is also a practicing physi
cian here.
Dr. Young was graduated from the
Yale Medical School in ltiiSO and his son
