In tho case of William Douglass Cross, tho colored wife murderer, who has been twice con victed of murder, and live or six times sentenced to be hanged at different peri ods, the execution of the sentence in each caso being postponed because of pending appeals, the President uas nnauy ordered u commutation of the sentence to imprisonment for life. Cross was to have been hanged to-day in the jail between the hours of 8 and 12. The warden's invitation to tho execution had beon sent out. and everything was in -radiuess at the jail except adjusting the rope upon tho gallows. Vetoed the Appropriation Kill.
