Gov't Report l4am Powder ABSOiHTTEnf TORE FEARS FOR THE SPREE No Doubt Has That ai Befallen i Accident Her. APPREHENSIONS OF THE AGENTS- Relieved That the Engines of the Steam ship IIhtu Ilroken l)omi-Not Sighted b) the Ilrltitiiiilo Probably Drifted Out ol the Track ot Westward Tratol Ulehl Hundred l'erons ou Hoard. New York, Dec, 3. The North Ger man Lloyd steamship Spree is more than two days overdue. There is nc doubt that an accident has befallen her. Whether the hat beau iu collision with another vessel or a submerged wreck, disabled by a storm or sustained injury to her engines, is a matter of coujecture. Even her agents confers that "somo thing" has happened to the steamship. The fears of tho agents were known late yesterday, when they sent a mes senger to interview the captain of the Britannic, which hid just arrived, hop ing to learn something of tho overdue steamship. Although the Britannic usually sights the Spree on one of the thruo last days of the voyage west, Jio siyn ol the Sprea wus seen. The Britannic's officers, always accus tomed to teeing the Spree, kept a look out for her, and say they were surprised at not seeing her. Oue fact known in connection with the Spree is that whatever has happened to her occurred on or before Sunday last. This is proved in this way: The Inmau liner City of New York alyrays passss the Spree on either the second or third day ot the voyage to this port, both vessels traveling in tho same direction. Tho Spree, in turn, overhauls the Blower vessel, the Britannic, u few hours later, and signals are exchanged. These three vessels have never before falied to sight each other. On the voyage, however, the fact that tho Spree was uot sighted tends to prove that she met with a mishap on or before Sunday, that day being; the earliest period at which the Spree could have been spoken. Agents give it as their opinion that her engines have broken down, and sbo is necessarily delayed while repairs nrs beina mado by tho corps ot engineers. The prevailing winds would compel her to drift to the southwest, out ot the truck: of westward steamship travel. It that is so, she will be sighted by an eastbound steamship (us the eastern track is more to tho southward) and reported iu Urns on the other side. Tho Spree has fifteen compartments, any five of which intact would keep her afloat. She is a lU-kuot vessel built o hteel, and has a crew ot SBO all told. In cluding the craw, there aro 800 persons aboard. ABANDONED THE STEAMER. Captain unci Creiv of a Lost Steamer Safe iu Isew lurk. QuArtANTiNE, S. I., Dec. U. The steam ship Cyntuiaua, Uapt.
