New yomc, Nov. 8. The declaration of the Democratic na tional platform in favor of a return to Mate banks and "wild cat" money lias played havoc with the Democracy in this presidential campaign, llnsuiess men, fearful of a restoration of the inflated anil debased currency of years ago, are desert ing Cleveland ami coming out boldly In favor of Harrison and sound money. They will vote the whole Republican ticket next Tuesday. Among the latest to renounce Democracy Is Frederick P. Olcott, president ot the Central Trust Company, of this city, ami a lift long Democrat, A Wideawake Business Man. Few among New York business men stand higher than Mr. Olcott In public esteem. The earnestness of his Democracy was attested by his election in 1870 n comptroller of the state of New York when he ran on the same ticket with Samuel J, Tilden. The widespiead evils certain to follow a return to the wildcat currency, coupled with his belief in the policy of a protective tariff, hnvo led him to do as thousands of others intend to do next week, join the Republican cause. "The policy of the present administra tion," declares Mr. Olcott. "is well known, nnd business has accommodated itself to It. Tinkering with the tariff and cur rency will unsettle nlTalrs, and labor and capital will have to adjust themselves to new conditions, and both will be forced to a lower plane of compensation. I intend to vote foi tlie re-election of President DEMOCRATIC WILD CAT MONEV Olotf Dimteral Oct m im Harrison, as every business man should." The Itepublican malingers have not been slow to profit by the mistaken and blun dering polioy of the Democracy. The peo ple have been fully informed of the effect ofa return to wild rat money A clever campaign document is gotten up after the style of the old state bank nute, and looks couielulug like the above The National Hanks. A comparison of the losses by depositors, cote holders and tho creditors of national hanks In the last thirty years with deposit ors and note holders of private banks is startling. An examination of the losses through national banks since they were established in 181)3 showB that the annual average loss to depositors nnd other credit ors during the entire period has been only one-twentieth of 1 per cent. The comp troller of the currency showed in his re port of 1801 that the losses by fail ures ot private banks throughout the country amounted in a single year lbuo to $17,477,410, which exceeds by far the total losses by national banks since their twtaullshtuent in XtiOS. This shows tlio con trust between the condition ot the national bank" and the private banks of today. IfADntD, Nov. 4. Rioters have been In possession of' Caceres, near Trujillo, luce Wednesday. The recent rise in tlie price of bread has caused much suffering among the workers in the cloth, leather aud linen factories. Yesterday agitators called a meeting of workiugmen lu the old town, and some 1,200 men and boys attended it. The speakers urged the people to plunder tho shops and bakeries. The efforts of the gendarmes to dis perse the worklngineu culminated in a fltlgt. Throe of the gendarmes were severely wounded with stones and knives, and eight rioters were seriously injured. the gendarmes were repulsed, and the workiugmen began attacking the baker ies. The b.ikers had barricaded their doors, and In only one case was tho barricade forced and tho shop plundered. JUsowliere the rioters smashed all tuo windows. Several men were knocked senseless with stones, and two womeu, entirely unconcerned in the demonstration, re ceived injuries, from the effects of which they will die. Notwithstanding the qualified denial by William Morris, the Socialist poet, that he had been of fered the post of Poet Laureate, it has been ascertained that Mr. Gladstone del egated l'rofessor Bryce to make the offer to Mr. Morris, aud that the latter de clined It. It is said that Mr. Gladstone prefers for the preseut to avoid offering the honor to Swinburne, probably becausi Swinburne has been opposed to Irish Home Rule, aud also because Swinburne is said to have shocked Mr. Gladstone, as well as the royal family, by a poem about a year ago, in which he advocated the assassin ation of the Czar of Russia.
