ABOUT FIBEWORKS.
New und Interesting Devices to Enliven
America's (Ireatest Holiday.
The demand for Art works, it is said, has
never been so great as it is this year. Not
only is the assortment of fireworks larger
than heretofore, tut many new and start

tbo patriotism which seeks expression in
celebrating the anniversary of our inde
pendence in this time-honored manner
Almost everything conceivablo is now ob
lainable, and tho prices aro considerably
less tbati in formor years.
Among many pieces quito novol in bril
liancy ard effect may bo mentioned thu
Chinese Mandarins, not heretofore used
outside of China; Floral Bomtsholle,
which, after displaying a series of colored
stars, ignite a sholl, which they shoot 250
foot to burst into a bouquet of colored stars
CO feot in diameter; ilammoth Six-star
Fountains, discharging immense variegated
stars, which change to Ecrpents, exploding
salutes and bouquets of colored fire; Re
volving Comet Rockets, Japanese Night

Bouquet Rockets, etc.
Even among tho lower priced fireworks
novelties abound, and a great variety of

THOUSANDS WILL ATTEND
The Great Musical Festival at Lakeside
on Angant loth.
When tho musical festival at Lakeside
was arranged for August 15, last, tbo com
mittee at first hesitated about putting the
affair on a grand scale, fearing that the
public might not appreciate their efforts
and a financial loss might result. But as
tho datu drow near thoy put additior a!
money into tho venture on tho Btrongih of
interest manifested by the people in this
and adjoining counties as Boon as itwa
properly advertised and tbo result was that
those who attended tho festival had ono of
tbo greatest musical treats ever offered in
this county.
So great was tbo success tbo committee
re-organized immediately after tho lo-tival
for tho summer of 1892 and fixed Aueust
15th, as tho day for tho second jubilee.
Tho arrangements for this'year aro far
tr.oro elaborate and exponslvo than those of
last year. Tho value of prizes havo been
increased from n total of 000 to ?800 and
three times as many medals, batons and
other emblems will be awarded tho victors
under tho conditions of the contests.
Tho interest manifested in tho festival
this yoar is also far greater than last. The
secretary is daily receiving requests for
programraot from all parts of this state
and many other states. Yosterday a letter
was received from ThomBS Vf. Davies, of
Blocton, Alabama, rcquostir.g a number oi
programmes fur distribution and requesting
tho name of tho adjudicator.
Tho singirg contests prorr.iso 'o be
spirited. Prof. William "Waters has oi-
ganlzed a choir, Mahanoy City has had
two practicing for several weeks, Centralis
has another in training, and Shamokin
people havo written for programmes and
say they will be on dork with Eomo of tho
best singers in the aulhracilo region who
will exert every effort to capture tho big
prize. Hazteton will not reach for the big
plum but sho will have many of her
singers on band to compete for tbo smtller
prizes, and her two German singing socie
ties will be present to compete for the $50
prize offered for tho best singing of "Der
Wald" ("Tho Forest") Ashland, Shamo
kin and Pottsville will also have German
singing societies on the ground to struggle
for tho prize.
Tho fuel that tho coramitt'-o has ongagod
Prof. Clark, of Philadelphia, as adjudica
tor for tho day, and Rev. Frod. Evans, also
f Philadelphia, os conductor, has given
tho lestival a strong prestige. Evory letter
the secretary receives contains favorable
mention of the gentlemen. Prof. Clark
was one of tho adjudicators at the recent
grand eisteddfod at Scranton vhen a pr
of ?600 was given to tho first choir. Ho
enjoys tho confidence of tho musical people
and fair and juit adjudications may bo
looked for at his hunds. Rev. Fred,
Evans is no stranger in these parts. He has
been in this and neighboring towns fre'
fluently as conductor of oistoddfods and
was the conductor of tho eistedd.od held
hero last Christmas under tho auspicos of
tbo Ivorltes.
As to tbo place whoro tho festival is to
be held It is so well known and has become
bo popular that only tho recont and pend
ing improvements of tho place need be
spoken of. The trotting park, in which
tho fostival will be held, is now in ezcollent
condition and completely surrounded by a
substantial fence. The management will
havo far better arrangements than last
year. A platlorm large enough to accom
modato 150 peoplo will be erected in front
of tbo grand stand and will bo raisod
suitablo for the occasion, Whon not in
attendance at the festival tho visitors will
find pleasure in tho adjoining grovo. On
these parts of the grounds the company
has put up a magnlficont carousal at a cost
of (6,000 in which adults as well as chil
dren will find a fountain oi pleasure.
Many improvements havo also been
made about tho lake section of tho park
and an ample supply of boats will be on
hand for thoso who may wish to onjoy a
row on tho water before and after tho
festival.
Tho immense- dancing pavilion erected
lait year will also bo in condition to accom
modate tho thousands of visitors. A first
class restaurant has been attached to it and
all will bo abundantly supplied with re
freshments at reasonable prices.
Roalizing tho popular growth of the
place tbo Philadelphia and Reading Rail
road Company has put a largo gang of
carpentors at work replacing tho old depot
with a mammoth depot and twin platform.
Tho platform will be of a V shape so that
it will run close to tho tracks of the main
lino and the Catawissa blanch. It will bo
a splendid etructuro and in keoping with
tho otbor park improvements. The frame
work is already completed and the depot
will probably bo thrown open to tho public
within two weoks.
