Tiunniiun Flood of Many Years Ago ltecnllctl. Tho recent spells ot excitement arising from tlio bursting of tbo Mahanoy City dam and tho threatened bursting of tho Kautlman dam recalls to mind the bursting of a dsm on tho Littlo Schuylkill, abovo Tnmaqua, in 1860. It had boon raining hard during tho night and Tamaqua was submerged. Schuylkill, Fanther Crock beforo dawn Tho Little and Wabash wore ono body of water. Houses, pig styes, fences, bridges, etc., were carried away and many lives wero lost. Among tho victims was a prominent German Lutheran pretcher whoso narao tho writer cannot recall. Tho damogo dono to rail roads and properties was great. The freshet swept through tho valloy with tro mondous force and carried everything in lino beforo it. Thero wore a number of dams on! the Littlo Schuylkill, which, before the heavy rain and freshet, was a moro creek, but the bursting of tho upper dam swept the others out of existence and turned the creek into a river. Tho writer witnessed the freshet from a porch of his houso on Hunter street In Tamaqua. There was a row of bouses on Centro street and tho water was rapidly rising above the door steps. A man who had apparently just left bis bed appearod at ono of tho doorways. Takirg in the situation at a glance the man shut tho door. Shortly after he was soon crawling upon tho roof from tho chimney as tho house was carried away by tho turbulent water. As th; houso floated past a tree near Donaldson's breaker the man caught hold of a limb and pulled himself from tho roof. Shortly after a cradlo floated down tho stream. In it was a sleeping bnbo which was soon lost to view and tho writer heard nothing of it until a few years ago he learnod tho Jtmbo had been miraculously saved. It grew to womanhood and is now tho wife of a resident in tho southern part of this county. Tho writer had tho name and address of the party, bui has mislaid it. If this should meet the eye of ono who knows the party tho wiitor would bo pleased to rcceivo tbo address again. During tho flood the rosidonco of Bev. Oharlos Spurr, who died rocontly at Mahanoy City, on Hunter street, Tama qua, was used as a morguo and many bodies wero carried thero to bo proptred for burial. Cool Shade Can be found at Vermillion, O., and those who wish to attend the camp meetings at that place during July and August can procure excursion tickets via tho Nickel l'lato from June 21st to August 23d at special ntos. t-aug-20 NEWS OF THE DAY. During a recent visit to (ho West the writer visited a reiativo who resides noar the Junction of tho Tippocanoo and Wabash rivers, In Indiana, and was shown a largo number of relics of ancient llndian times ploughed up on tho farms in that locality. Among tho rollcs woro a cannon ball three lnchos in dlamctor, n slono hatchot, many flint arrow heads, flints used for striking Are, and flat and rcund stones which had no doubt been wed by tbo Indians for grinding grain, etc. Theso rolics wero found on and near the grounds upon which tho battlo of Tippecanoe was fought by General William Honry Harrison, grandfather of the present Fresidont, in Novombor, 1811. eighty-one yoars ago. Tho writor brought a number of tho nrrow heads east with him. Natural gas Is being discovered in many plaros in Indiana whero it was never ex poctcd. Wherever it is found new towns spring up as If rais' d by a magic wand, and old towns partako ot new lifo and spread out with surprising rapidity. Industrial establishments follow In tbo wake of theso ditcovcries when the fuel is given erntu itouly, which is an encruragrmont that is frequently oxtended. The gas is piped many miles and supplies a great number of towns and cities. Thoso who uso tho gas for beating or cooking tay thoy would not do without it at any price. Thero is no trouble, dirt or waste in connection with it. All that is necessary is to Btriko a match, turn the gas valvo and, prestel ycu havo a a bright tiro in your stove. It does not tako long to heat tho largest and coldet houso?, and tho heat can bo regulated. In the summer, after n meal; is cocked, the gas can bo turned oif and thero is no wasto. When tho writer was in Muncy years ago that placo was a mere village, al though a county seat, and tho population did not oxceed 1 200. It now has a popu lation of 12 000, a largo number of manu facturing establishments, somo vory largo and fine business houses, and many elegint residences. This growth is duo to tbo dis covery of natural gas and oil in and about tho placo. Marion is anotbor placo in Indiana that was scarcely known r. fow years ago, but which is now a placo of largo proportions with many manufacturing establishments. Ono of tho largest tin plate establish ments in Wales is to be transferred to this country in tho near future and located in one of the towns of this great natural gas field. Tho establishment will employ 2,000 hands. A numbor of former Schuylkill county people reside in Munclo and aro well off. Speaking of meeting former Schuylkill countians in tbo West reminds mo of a Btory told by 'Squire Hay, formerly of Lost Creek, but now of Dubois, Clearfield county, this state. While travoling through a Western town onn day tho 'squlro heard tho notes from a fife. Listening intontly for a few moments tbo 'squire made up his mind that ho know the player, although ho could not teo him. Tbo character of tho playing was such that he identified It n that of an old acqualntnnce in tho cast. "If that Isn't George Brown," said tho quiro as ho sought tho player, "I'll cat my hat." And It was George B'own, a blacksmith, who resided in Schuylkill county in the fifties and who was a mem ber ef a fifo and drum corps at Tamaqua with Jhmos Hinkley, now of Heading, and John W. Boyer, now of New Harmony, Indiana. A Million Friends. A friend In need is a friend indeed, and not less than one million people have found just such a friend in Dr. King's New Dis covery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds.
