THE WATER WORKS
THE JOINT COMMITTEE AND
WATER COMPANY MEET.
GZAR LAMB EXCLUDES REPORTERS
For Somo Unknown Reason it
Was Not Desired That a Publio
Record of the Proceedings
Should be Made.
HE jo'nt committee
.nd representatives of
tho Shenandoah Wit
ter & Gas Company
met in joint session in
tho Counicl chamber
last night. The joint
committee membori
' present were J. F.
Higgins, HcGuire, Wurm, Gable, Stout,
Betteridge, Lamb, Franoy, Scheifly, Will,
iam Kimmel, Wragg, J. H. Pomeroy and
Coakley. The water company representa
tives were T. R. Beddall, S. D. IlesB. John
R, Jones, M. Monaghan, E. J. Wneley,
Charles Bowman, D. O. Running, Lewis
Grant and George Roads, of Pottsvllle,
and John Grant.
Cz-tr Lamb presided and opened the ball
by announcing that the joint committee
did not wish to have any newspapor re
porters present, whereupon tho Herald
reporter withdrew. Later in the evening
tour members of the joint committee
stated that they did not countenance star
chamber proceedings and that they had
made no objection to the presence of re
porters at the meeting.
According to the information gleanod by
a Hkrald reporter after the meeting there
were somo spirited arguments on both sides
csto the value of the water company's
plant. Some members of tho joint com
mittee compared, tho cost of some horses
and cows with others, but the water.com
pany representatives arguod that it was not
a, question of the value of horses and cows,
but of water works.
Gable said that the dams are in danger
of destruction by mine workings and that
there are cracks that already indicate this,
Ono of the water company retorted that if
such is the case ho could not see why tho
borough should be willing to give anything
for the plant,
The joint committee then wanted to
know what proposition tho water company
had to make. Tho answer was that tho
company expected a proposition from tho
borough, that the company had already
made an alternative proposition to sell out
for S125.000, or give the borough water for
firo purposes free of charge and cancel all
indebtedness.
The committee wanted to know if tho
company could not put a lower figure on
tho plant and the representatives answered
that it could not change its oflor without
having another full meeting of the com
pany's directors to consider the matter.
Bore the conference practically ended
and the water company people then with
drew.
Czar Lamb then called the joint com
mittee to order and the water question was
again discussed. Four members submitted
figures on their ostimate of value of tho
water company's plant. They were
Gable, $00,000 : Stout, 875.000; McGuiro,
f80,000 ; Scheifly,, fOO.000.
A motion was made that the secretary
write to the water company offering $75,000
for its plant., Scheifly wanted the motion
amended to make the price $90,000 on con
dition that the water company cancel all
its claim) againEt the borough,
The motion to offer $75,000 was finally
carried. ,
The water company is to roply within
six days. After the commilteo considers It
the reply will be submitted to tho Borough
Council.

NOTES OP TRAVEL.
Tho Western People are Great Coiigumore
or Chewing Guin.
Cleveland is the centro of tho chewing
gum industry In this country. Hundreds
of men, women, boys and girls aro em
ployed in its manufacture and tho con
sumption is very great. The West has a
mania for tho gum and tobacco is being
steadily discarded. Everybody chews
gum, old and young mon and women, tho
dudes and tho dudeons, and even tho
babios. Thore aro many kinds of gum,
Bnd ways of putting it up in wrappers and
packages for sale, aDd the names of equally
numorous. But tho chewing gum industry
of to-day, in all its phases, is far superior
to the old time manufacture. Medicinal
qualities now enter into the products and
many of them are highly recommended as
good for dyspeptics, because pepsin is used
in the preparation. It is not an unusual
sight to see a whole car full of passengers
chewing gum in tho West. The leading
arliclo is Beeman's Pepsin Gum, manu
factured in Clovoland, Ohio. Its manu
facturers claim it is a perfect and delightful
remedy for all forms of indigestion and the
sale the gum has would seem to indicate
that the claim is a good ono.
It would not be surprising if, In a few
yoars, Ubio should rank as one of the
largest producers of grapes and lead in the
manufacture of wine from the fruit.
A dolightful ride through a rich country
and somo of tho finest villages and towns
in the land is afforded passengers on tho
Nickel Plate road between Buffalo and
Chicago, The train service is excellent
and the railway peoplo are extremely
courteous and accommodating. Among
the principal cities and towns this road
passes through are Dunkirk, N. Y,, Erie,
Pa., Ashtabula, Painesville, Cleveland,
Lorain, Belloville, Green Springs, Ver
million and Fostorift, Ohio ; Fort Wayne,
Indiana. The distance between Buffalo
and Chicago, via this road, is 523 miles.
The time is equabto that of tbepther roads.
For many miles Lako Erie is in full sight
of the passengers. The proper name of the
road, is New York, Chicago and St. Louis
Railroad. It is one of the Vanderbilt
system roads. Messrs. Moore and Max
well ably represont the road at Buffalo, N,
Y. They are excellent business mon nnct
win many patrons for tho road by their
kind treatment of the public
If during some part of your lifo, reader,
you intend visiting tho west, do not fail to
extend your trip to the northwest and take
in tho "twin cities" St. Paul and Minne
apolis, Minn. You will never regret such
a visit and you will see enough to arouse a
desire on tho part of your children and
grandchildren to take the eamo trip.
Should you conclude to follow this advico
tack on to it tho fact that the Chicago,
Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad is tho
popular road to tho northwost. You can
leave Chicago at 0 o'clock in the evening,
secure a berth in tho sleeper and take
things easy until the next morning, when
you will arrive in St. Paul. A square
from tho Union depot is the Merchants'
