Wilkinson, SO S. Main St., Shenandoah. DID YOU EVER I Think what it cost to manufacture Baking Powder f Did you ever think how baking pow der is sold? Did you over think there must be a large profit in it somewhere? The manufac turer of a certain baking powder pay out nearly a million dollars or more a year advertising their powder, trying to mako people believe It Is tho best made. Their baking powder is sold at 50c per pound. Tho retailer makes his profit, the Jobber makes his prollt, the manufacturer makes his profit, and tho consumer pays for all these and the newspaper advertising also. What does It cost to manufacture tho powder! Other manufacturers glvo away 25 or 30 cents worth of china, glassware, toys, hardware, books, etc., with every pound of faking pow der. Again the query, what docs It cost to manufacture tho powder can you think it out? You don't need to. Glrvln, Duncan & Wald ley have a few words on tho baking powder question. Until September 1 we will sell Penn sylvania Baking Powder at TEN CENTS per pound. It doesn't concern you whether wo mako or lose on It wo want to get it intro duced. RECEIVES A MAJORITY OF 250 Tho Result Was Rocel ed by tho Adherents of tho Joint Com mittee as a Vindication for Themselves. HE election hold in town yesterday wot conducted under the trovisions (f tho now Baker Utllot Law, and was tlif first to bo held under that system Id tho county. Tho gen eral opinion of tho olecton seems to bo that tho syslom is a great improvement over tho old law. Wo beliavo tho pyslom will bo more favorably received when the voters become hotter acquainted with its provisions. This fact undoubtedly had considerable to qo with the result of tho votes yesterday, as many electors deposited their ballots through nn ignoranco of tho requirements of tbo law. A, cross (x) marked opposite the tquare "For iccreaso of dobt," indicates a vote for the incrca'o. To those acquainted with the features of the law, this requirement was well understood, but tho avetage voter would naturally place tho cross-mark opposite that which ho wishes to discard, and for this very reason many votes were counted differo.it from tho intent of tho voter. The friends of tho new water works had a majority in every ward in tho borough, with the singlo exception of tho Socond. The result shows that tho voters of tho lat ter ward aro not in favor of the new water works, and it also proves that they have been misrepresented by their represents tive in Council in casting his vote in that body in favor of the establishment of the works. Tho greatest surpriso was felt when tue vote of the Third ward was announced. Tho adhoronts of the old company con fidently expected a majority against the increase of debt. Tho result of tho election was enthusiasti cally received by tho joint committee and thoir friends, but, on tho othor hand, tho opposition seem to have lost no sloop over tho matter, and assert that if the joint commltteo had issuod their "stump-speech" two weeks provious tho result would have been entirely dillercnt. Tho total vote of the borough by wards is as follows: For increase 173 W . 102 10O iro Against lncrcaso 77 107 158 101 71 Hi Mat. First ward Second ward.. Third ward Fourth ward.., Fifth ward 38 31 69 09 Total , Total majority, 250. 701 False Humors. It was reported upon our streets this morning that the old water company had increased their wator rents to $1.75 per month, and that tho fire companies would be charged g5 per day for water furnished the sprinklers. Investigation, howovor, proved tho rumors to bo without founda tion. The officials of the company eay the rents have not baen increased, and that they have no intention to pursue such a course. Tho rumor undoubtedly eminatod from the friends of tho now water works. An Organized Movement. There appears to bo an organizod movo ment on tho part of a certain class of citizons of this town to persecuto the Jewish portion ot our population, and which should demand the serious attention of our borough authorities. Several instances have lately boon rocorded whoro the Jons bavo been attacked by this class of people, and their hostility is not con fined to tho malo portion of the Jowish residents, tho females also coming In for a share of their hatred.
