It has been estimated by the free trade ndvocatea that Germany, with her protective tariff, ia furnishing more immigrants to America, a pro tective country, than is froo trade Eugland, and the question ia asked, why ? The proposition la not correctly stated. The figures show exactly the contrary. During tho year ending June 30, 1S00, Germany Bent to America alone 92,427 Immigrants, while Great Britain, not including Wales, sent J2S,3-10. This question "vvaa propounded by a leading advocate of "tariff reform" to a protectionist Republican during the debate in Congress to which no reply woa given. The reply might have easily been found in the following statement : A comparison of the immigrants arivlng in America from the two countries narmd above from 1815 to June 30, 1890, Is as follows: Great Britain, 7.235,277 out of a population of 35,- 000,000; while from Germrny there came 4,801,128 out of a population of 46,000,000. These figures speak for themselves. Mu. Holman has been driven to declare "an Increase in the revenues is indispensable If the expenditures are to continue on the basis of the present session." As long ago as April, 1891, Senator Cockrell, of Missouri, a Dem ocrat, foretold that the expenditures of this Congress must inevitably be what they have proved to be namely, greater than those of the "billion- dollar Congress." And yet Mr. Hoi man and a horde of hla fellow Demo crats came to Washington howling about the extravagance of the "bill ion-dollar" Congress, and vociferating for "retrenchment and reform." They went promptly to work to pass a free wool bill, a free-blndlng twlne bill, a free-cotton-tie bill and are talking of still further measures to cut off tariff duties, without the slightest regard to the needs of the revenue. The truth is now disclosed to the American people that the whole programme has been one of buncombe and pretense and was not in any particular a Blncere project of legislation. The Democrats must either admit that or that their legislators are arrant fools. The silver plank of the Iowa Demo crats Is one of the most remarkable straddles on record. To make it meau anything and to harmonize with itself, at least oue-half must be rejected but which shall It be the ellver half or the gold half ? As It stands no w, it declares for free coinage, subject to such conditions and qualifications as would satisfy the most extreme gold monomeutallista or "gold-bugs." Con versely it declares for such a monetary condition as oannot be maintained without a careful regulation and Urn itatlon of silver coinage. The Iowa Democrats may have some convictions on the coinage question, but they are booming Bolea Just now, and want to run with the hare and hunt with the bounds. CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS.
