Use A STAND TAKEN FOR THE LITHUANIANS, AN EDITOR TRIES TO SHOW THE EVILS. CLAIMS THE. PEOPLE ARE DELUDED And Scores tho Lithuanian Prlosts for Tholr Conduct and Teach ingsSay They Docounco tho Public Sohools. N s letter over hia signature to tho Ply mouth Tribune Joseph Andzulaitie, editor of tho Vienybe, cites what ho alleges to bo tho causes of dissension among tho Lithuanian people in this country. Ho says: "Lithuan ians are well-known to tho Americans, at leust in the coal regions. There are many things in tho life of Lithuanians which would interest the community at large, still I intond to draw attention to-day only to the point in question, namely, why wo aro witnesses oi frequont troublo among this immigrant population. "There aro many causes: themcstovi dont ono is the conduct and the teachings of the Lithuanian priests. I shall givo illustrations : Rev. Jadyzus, of Brooklyn, K. Y., is widely known by his lascivious- noss and drunkenness; tho same man teaches bis parishioners that knowledge is sin, that reading of books and papers is a trespass in tho eyos of God. Also Key. 8, Pautienius, of Baltimore, ltd., a man not of innocent moral character, thunders against the public schools of this country, calling them "dons of paganism," where Jews and heretics are employed as teachers to mislead the youth. Bov. A. Varnagirs, well-known in Plymouth somo time ago, did not care for anything, oxcopt money making ; to-day ha has married a young girl of Atlantic City, N. J. "Rev. A. Burba, of Plymouth in Jhis sermons preaches against tho Lithuanian authors who endeavor to eulighton the poople, disseminates hate and intolorence to other confessions besides Catholicism, calling other churchos 'pagan,' and their adherents 'paeans' and 'heretics.' Rev. Zlotorzynski, of Pittston, Is quito con cerned because among his parishionors books and papers find buyers and readers; ho persecutes with whatevor power ho has tho Lithuanian Society of Sciences and Arts in America ; tends to make mute all his parishioners, somo of them treating with whiskey and beer, othors by somo small gifts, others oven threatening wilh a royolver in tho hand, as happenod on April SOth, whero tho parson wounded Mr. M. Kaszuba, a miner, who is oagor to read books and disseminate knowledge among his iellow-men. Rov. Maszatos, of Froo land, says that ho would rathor leave his parish than admit a committee o( parish ioners to take caro of tho treasury of the church, etc. "It remains to say that theso reverend gentlemen aro quito rude in thoir habits, fond not of science and progress, but of boor and tho tonder sex, men who do not caro for anything olso but thoir purso and comfort. "Therefore it is not surprising that we find fermontation among Lithuanians going on and growing all tho tirao. The relations between the pastors and their ehoop becomo moro uneasy, and especially the adherents of progress and the 'Lithu anian Society of Sciences and Arts' have to enduro maledictions and rurses from the pulpit. Still tho society is growing and the near future will show whetbor perversion and egotism, or progress, onlightenment and justice aro going to tako lead among tho troubled Lithuanians." Rider Haggard's famous novel, "Cleopatra." This work may be fairly acknowledged as the best novel Haggard has ever written, with beautiful idyls scattered through its pages from the pen of Andrew Lang, Tho novel is fresh, brilliant, beautiful, The play differs from Sardou's version of tho story and, indeed, from that of any other writer, in that Anthony is almost entirely obliterated, or, at any rate, is used only for tho purpose of bringing out In strong relief tho great love for Cleopatra by Harmachis, a royal Egyptian brought up as a priest and secrotly crowned as Pharaoah of Upper and Lower Nile. Those events bring him from the obscurity of his birth to the splendor of Cleopatra's court, where ho becomes her high priost and her devoted lover, and in turn as devotedly loved by Charmion, Cleopatra's hand-maiden, whoso affection, it is needloss to say, Harmachi3 does not return. As Cleopatra makos no return of her high priest's affection, it will bo seen that Har machis is between two fires. Tho play onds with tho death of tho principal personages. An Announcement.
