Indignation Is nt i high pitch in St. Faul last night over the murder of George II. Spauldlng, n boy of 10 years, nt Portage, Wis., shortly before dawn on Saturday morning. Young Spauldlng was the son of Hugh Spnuldlug, one of St. Paul's leading cit izens. Mr. Spauldlng arrived hero yes terday nftornoon with the body of his son and cleared up the mystery of the assassination. He was killed by George Wlialen, la young man of 25, whom Spauldlns considered ono of his warmest friends. Three or four days ago Whnlen coaxed Spauldlng to tnko a trip to Chicago. On Friday Spauldlng's father purchased tickets for both young men, gave his son $25 dollais and a gold watch, and ac companied tho pair to the evontng train. On tho way to Chicago Whalen prevailed on Spauldlng to get off tho train for a day at l'ortngo. They left the cars at that point at !):40 In the morning. After walking a few rods along the track Whalen picked up a broken, jagged coupling pin and bent Spauldlng's head Into n jolly. Robbing the body of the money and the watch, Whalen took Spauldlng's coat and shoes, throw the body into the canal, and made Ills escape. Ho bad evidently planned tho murder several days before. Tho dead body of a woman was found in a sack In the area of a villa in the Kaiser Wilhelm strasse last night. She had been strangled, aud the marks of lingers were still apparent on her throat. Sho was Identified as n ragpicker who was a well-to-do peasant's daughter, aud lived with her father in the country until about tmrteen years ago. She ran away with a captain In the reserves named Schall, and left him shortly after her arrival In 13erlln for a btudent whom she subsequently deserted for an attache of tho Russian legation. Sho lost her beauty through dissipa tion, and for the last eight years had been a ragpicker.
