Australia The Victims HuppoHed to be Ills Wife unit Children. London, March 17. A tragedy unparal leled In the history of Urltlsh crime came to light yesterday through a most singular chain ot circumstances. In July last a man ot the name ot Arthur Williams lived In the Dinham Villa, in Baiuhill, a fashionable suburb of Liver pool. Not much seems to bo known about the antecedents of Williams. He seems, however, to have been received in society, and passed as a well-to-do bach elor. ' He courted Miss Mather, a young wo man generally admired for her beauty nnd other attractions, nnd recognized as a local belle. They got married ant) went to Australia, where they were supposed to be living happjly. The people of of lialnhill wero shocked, a few days ngo, by the news from Australia that A Illianis had been arrested there on a charge of murdering his wife aud chil dren. As soon as these facts becamo noised about in llainhill the people called to mind queer suspicions that had been alloat about Williuins when he occupied the Diuliam Villa. They remembered that one day u woman and two children had visited the villa to see WilliamSfitud. from the moment of their entering the place no one had seen them ugaln. The ull'alr caused some remark ut tho time, but, nobody thought of murder, aud t,ie matter was dropped with the supposition that the three had gone away without, ue iug seen. Now, however, tho neighbors" began to suspect that there might have been foul play, and they determined to state the facts to the "police. The police concluded that no harm could be done by Investigating, aud they proceeded to the Ditibam Villa yesterday and began to dig up beneath the fire place. They noticed, as they began, signs that tho place had been disturbed within a comparatively recent period, and certainly muce other work had been done In the interior of the villa. Ihey hardly expected, bower, to dis cover anything, and their amazement was great when, after they had removed the outer covering, they came upon the bodies of two children. The body of one child indicated that the little one, when killed, was about 7 years o age, und the other was apparently about 0 years of age. Both bodies were wrapped in a damask table cloth and both hud their throats cut. The remains were in a fair state of preservation, aud neighbors who had. seen the woman and tho two children at once concluded that these were the chil dren. Tho digging then proceeded with greuter energy than before, and the searchers soon came upon another body. n-i.t.. te T he a wom.m. The throat was also upon heiug unearthed, was louud villi The police kept digging, while outside the new hpread and the excitement grew and thousands rushed to the scene of the tragedies. A now force of police was called upon and a cordon established around the villa It was now waning toward even ing, and tho digging proceeded rapidly, for rumor grew on rumor aud other re collections suggested that there were more victims in tho Sepulchre beneath the fireplace. Tho next body unearthed was that of a girl of 12 years. Unlike the former vie- wns'eWden'S tlm" Mult probubly ante-dated that of the woman niid two children. The girl's body was removed aud the search kept up. A baby about 1 year old, and with its throat cut was reached next. Even the hardened policemen could not restrain an exclamation of horror as the tiny and shrunken body was lifted up to view. The worK of concealing the bodies was carried out carefully. After a deep hole bad beeu dug thd bodies ot the woman aud two children were thrown in, and cement was poured upon them. Then tho bodies of the two elder children wero thrown in and more cement was poured Into the hole. Next tho Hag-stones weio laid over the top of tho bole und, finally, over all, was applied u layer ot six inches of cement, extending over the entire kitchen. Up to this hour no more discoveries have been made. The newn- has caused almost a frenzy lu Liverpool, and tue multitude have rushed to the conclusion that Williams must be "Jack too liip per." 'lhtuu is no known -evidence, however, to Mistain this theory, us the victims were not niutiluted otherwise than stated aiiovu. At least such Is the Blatemeut of the police. llie people in llaiuhill believe that the woman and two children who disap peared upon visiting too villu. and whoso bodiea, vtere undoubtedly among those discovered, were a former wife of Wil liams niul their two children, and that William bad got them lo visit tho villa for the purpose of getting rid of them in order that they might not be In the way ot Ills in irrlago to Jllss .Mather. Tins, however, is only au impression based on the circumstances. At tue time of the murder of Miss Mulher. tho wife with whom he went to Australia, Williams mid Ills wife were in Jielbotiine, aud it U there that ho is under arrest. Although Williams' appearance corre sponds with ouu defccripuon of "Jack the ISIppur," the general impression is that tho two men are nut identical. I ho wounds on tlie bodies already discovered, moreover, show lew, )f any, of the ana tomical fwtturwi of tho "Hipper" mur ders.
