The case Is nn action of contract, wliem by Miss Susan McCarthy, of Iluverhlll, claims damages to tho extent of $!,0U0 from Charles M. Coflin, a Haverhill jeweler, for breach of promise to marry her. Plaintiff, who Is 55 years old, alleges that she has kept steady company with defendant 22 years. During this timo defendant made several proposals of marriage, and the final one was ac cepted, but no murrluge ever took place. The parties finally quarreled and parted. Defendant rfused to live up to his promise, and also refused to help plaintiff In any way. The defense Is a general denial. Defendant Coffin admits living In the same house with the plaintiff for yoars. He testified that marriage was never con sidered, and that he never proposed the matter to Miss McCai thy. Ilowover, he had given her to understand that a mar riage would never take place. Had lived unlawfully with plaintiff for years as man and mistress and given her presents of monoy and jewelry. The case occupied the entire session. At adjournment, arguments for the plaintiff were being made, Several sen sational scenes were enacted during the trial. Miss McCarthy fainting Boveral times on the stand and while defendant was roferrlng to their unlawful In timacy. Miss McCarthy never was married but lias, however, a pretty daughter 21 years of age, who was duo of the plaintiff's principal witnesses. On Monday night the family retired as tltunl. About midnight, after all wero sleeping, ho arose and went to tho room wheiohls daughter and his young son, lying ill, sleep. Ho secured the doors, dragged Lottie out of bed on to the floor, and afer a fierce struggle, accom plished his purpose. His family wero so terrified at his threats of murder that the the authorities were not made ac quainted with the crime at tho time. Uxbbidok, Mass., March 11. Ira Ar nold, of Dotiglais, was arraignod here yesterday, charged with counterfeiting. In the complaint he was charged with having passed number of counterfeit coins. The evidence showed that the coins passed were nickel. Under tho Stuto law there Is no provision making the counterfeiting ol nickel coins an offense. It is, however, an offense under the United States law, aud upon tho defendant's dismissal under the State law, he was at once arrested by n United States Marshal, and taken to Boston. Herman Krouso tried to murder his sweetheart, Margaret Conrad here, and believing her injuries would prove fatal, placed the muzzle ot his revolver iu his mouth and killed himself.
