Mrs. Frank Fair, of Akron, Ohio, has seturned to her home in the Buckeye state after a recent short visit in this vicinity. Calvin Folk,of Meyersdale, accident- ally shot his 18-year-old daughter, last Eriday, while examining a revolver. While at the hos- pital with his wife, Mr. Keller was stricken down with a severe and sudden case of typhoid pneumonia. W. A. Shoemaker, who had been editing the Meyersdale Republicen for more than a year, and at the same time acting as foreman of that paper, found his duties too strenuous, and at his requ=st was relieved of the editor- ship, within the past week, and that ‘position is now filled-by W. F. Cleaver, a well-known newspaper man of Cum- berland, Md. We are glad to note that we found Mr. Lichty in an optimistic mood and his condition improving. He said: “Tell my friends that I am getting along all right and hope to be out soon.” We trust that his hopes may be speedily realized. While en route to Pittsburg, Mon- day, the editor had the pleasure of esteemed friends, the Rev. Albert K. Travis, who filled the M. E. pastorate in Salisbury, a few years ago, in an able and highly satisfactory manner. It did the editor much good to once more mest and greet Mr. Travis, and he requested tbat his best wishes and kindest regards be extended to his many Salisbury friends. The fire is be- lieved to be of incendiary origin, and | started in the Gurley shop, spreading | Josiah Keller, a former postmaster of meeting on-the train one of fis. highly to Bittner’s works. Mr. Gurley places the loss of his concern at $10,000, with $2,500 insurance. Bittner’s loss is es- timated at $7,000, with only $1,700 in- surance. The Gurley concern an- nounces that it will rebuild on a much larger scale, but Mr. Bittner has not yet decided what course he will pursue. Ross Lichty, one of the prosperous and expert farmers contributed to the great West by Somerset county, arriv- ed here last Saturday for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Lich- ty: He expects to remain several weeks, and his many old-time Salisbury | friends are all delighted to see him. Ross is one of the many solid and suc- cessful men turned out by a well dis- ciplined home and the old white school house that stood en the hill. He re- sides in Thayer county, Nebraska, where he owns a fine, large farm, and is noted as one of the best farmers in that locality. Yost, who is one of the prominent business men of the city of Roanoke, Vai sends us the good news that the city of Roanoke was voted dry at a recent election held there to decide whether the city should continue to have saloons or not. It was a hard fought battle, but the “drys” won by 88 majority. Fifty-four saloons and several breweries and dis- tilleries will have to close. Thus does the temperance wave continue to sweep over the country, and each year adds large additions to the “dry” territory. Everywhere the saloon and gin mill is beginning to be more and more looked nuisance. The saloon must go, and it can’t go any too soon. Miller. ” rE ‘ Last weeksHotel Wagner, or what is perhaps better known as the Hay hotel, in this city, was closed by the Sheriff The proprietor, Frank Wagner, who had also been conducting a livery busi- ness, has failed, and everything he possessed has passed into the hands of the Sheriff, through suit that has been brought by Attorney Ross R. Scott, of Somerset, and others.. The hotel is owned by Mrs. C. T. Hay, who has a heavy claim against Landlord Wagner for rent. All the personal property of Mr. Wagner will be sold at public sale, by thé Sheriff, next Monday. In the meantime the bar is open and conduct- ed by a man placed in charge by the Sheriff. After the-sale, however, and as =oon as the necessary transfer can be dawrully made, the hotel is to be conducted by C. A. Bender, of Grants- ville; Md., who has leased it. a. Shot While Attempting to Rob Store, by Gun Set for Robbers. A manwhose identity has not yet been established was shot and seriously -in- jured, last Thursday night, while at- tempting to rob the store of Miller & Saylor, at Summit Mills. The man broke open the front door and was attempting to open the money drawer, which discharged a shotgun concealed near the drawer and con- nected to it. Over 20 shots penetrated the man’s right side and arm. It is thought he is injured internally. Owing to the New Year shooting, no attention was paid to the report of the gun, and the man left the store.” After walking several miles, he played out, and calling a farmer, Howard Maust, he surrendered. Maust brought the men- to Meyers- dale and summoned Dr. W. T. Rowe. The man was taken to the hospital at Somerset. 51 This was the third time in 14 months that Miller & Saylor’s store had been entered by robbers. The second time, last April, the safe was blown open.
