ALBERT REITZ, Secretary. 7-2 Let us see what a good piiiter can do, and does every working day of his life. He takes a manuscript, the chirography of which would make the lid of a Chinese tea-chest blush with envy, translates it into the vernacular as he goes along, corrects the spelling rhetoric, and turns it out—not as the author wrote it, but as he intended to write it. He sets up in type better English than most men can write. He can detect errors of fact as well as of style. He can give the sporting editor points on horses and the religious edi- tor on theology. He can appreciate the merits of a discussion on the tariff, and detect the fallacies in a profound leader on economics; and he can do more hard and intelligent work, it he has to, than any other craftsman. Very few people, comparatively, have any adequate idea of the immense cost of producing a modern daily newspa- per, particularly in the large cities of the country. Some authentic figures on the subject have recently beeh made public, and will doubtless occasion sur- prise to the uninformed. The “compo- sition,” (printers’ weekly pay roll) for instance, on the Baltimore American, is $2,000; on the Boston Globe, $4,200; on the Globe-Democrat, $3,000; on the New York Herald, $4,000; and other papers in proportion. Bills for special telegrams are another big item of ex- pense. On the Chicago Herald a few years ago they rrn to $4,500 per month ; St. Louis Globe-Democrat, $12,000; San | Francisco Examiner, $8,000; Boston | Herald, $6,000; and St. Louis Republic, $25.00 REWARD! We regret to say that there are in this town some people who are noted for slandering and traducing the char- acters of others who are in every re- spect far better than their traduecers. These character assassins to whom we refer are not confined to any one, fam- ily, but to a number of families, and most of them are noted for.having been too loose in their time, in fact just about as loose as they now are with their tongues. Their chief delight seems to be to defame the characters of virtuous young girls, those who al- ways behave themselves well and re- fuse to mix with the class the gossips are found in. Several parents whose daughters have recently been lied about and de- famed by scandal-mongers have taken the trouble to run down some of the lies to their source, and such a squirm- ing, apologizing and attempting to shift responsibility from one to the other, as they have caused among the foul slanderers, has seldom, if ever be- fore been witnessed in Salisbury. Some of the gossips are now at the mercy of the people whom they have wronged and the only thing that will keep them from getting a visit from the Sheriff is their good behavior in the future. Otherwise something will drop, and it will drop very bard, too, for there is far more indisputable evidence against the slanderers than they are aware of or have ever even dreamed of. This thing of slanderous persons try- ing to bring virtuous and properly be- haved young women down on a level with their traducers has gone far enough, and the "unjustly slandered girls and their parents do not propose tc put up with any more of it. A REVELATION, It is a revelation to people, the se- vere cases of lung trouble that have been cured by Foley’s Honey and Tar. It not only stops the cough, but heals and strengthens the lungs. IL. M. Rug- gles, Reasnor, Towa, writes: “The doe- tors said I had consumption, and I got no better until I took Foley’s Honey and Tar. It stopped the hemorrhages and pain in my lungs and they are now as sound as a bullet.” Elk Lick Phar- macy, E. H. Miller, propristor. 81 THE BLANKS WE KEEP.
