John Mitchell will go down in his- tory as one of the ablest Presidents the union miners ever had, and his parting | injunction to the United Mine Workers to avoid sympathetic strikes. “I have not seen any benefit accrue from any sympathetic strikes,” he says. There may be isolated cases wherein one labor organization is aided by a sympathetie strike on the part of a kindred organization, but as a general rule President Mitchell's proposition is correct. Even where aid is in this union is rendered at the expense of the sympathizers. “Every tub should stand on its own bottom,” is an old ad- age. and when the tub won’t so stand, there is something radically wrong with its architecture. Union labor should be careful in its efforts to obtain its just reward that it does not do injustice to its employ- ment. Itis generally conceded that the man who killed the goose that laid golden eggs was a foolish fellow. Union labor is sometimes powerful ‘enough to kill the goose, but killing reacts upon itself. Probably this is what John Mitchell meant.—Connelisville Courier. ty — THE JUMPING OFF PLACE. “Consumption had me in its grasp; and I had almost reached the jumping off place when I was advised to try Dr. King’s New Discovery; and I want to say right now, it saved my life. A Woman Who Profited by the Theft of Her Chickens. The story of the theft of twelve pul- lets from the coop of a Springfield township woman and the finding of a pocketbook containing over $1,100 in cash is the choisest bit of gossip that has circulated in the mountain district adjoining Connellsville township for many years. A woman, who lives along the Springfield road, or close to it, not long ago awoke one morning to find that her chicken coop had been broken into during the night and twelve plump pullets surreptitiously removed. In walking about the coop the woman’s foot tread on something peculiar in feel. She stooped down and investi- gated in the straw. She was astound- ed to find a long leather pocketbook bulging with genuine greenbacks. There was over $1,100 in bills neatly pressed in the big wallet. The woman did not confide to anyone for several days of her find. She secreted the money and ceased to mourn for the pnllets. Directly a huckster who makes periodical trips through the mountains and over into Somerset county, came along. He inquired if the woman had any chickens for sale, She told him the story of their theft, omitting any reference to the finding of the pocketbook. The huckster didn’t seem surprised at the loss of the pullets, but evinced a strong desire to see the coop they had been taken from, The woman accompanied him there, and could hardly suppress a smile as || the nervous huckster shuffled and scraped about the straw on the floor of the coop as he pretended to look things over. He examined the floor carefully with his feet, and then was loath to leave. : \ day or so following the huckster’s visit, the woman took the money to Uniontown, where she deposited the roll in a bank, telling the cashier of the manner in which she found it, and her suspicions as to its owner. It is still there. The huckster is either afraid or ashamed to admit that he lost his pocketbook in the chicken coop, and the woman who found it is not worry- ing about the loss of her chickens.— Connellsville Courier. NEGLECTED COLDS THREATEN LIFE. [From the Chicago Tribune.] “‘Don’t trifle with a cold, is good ad- vice for prudent men and women. It may be vital in the case of a child. Proper food, good ventilation, and dry, warm clothing are the proper. safe- guards against colds. If they are maintained through the changeable weather of autumn, winter and spring, the chances of a surprise from ordi- nary colds will be slight. But the or- dinary light cold will become severe if neglected, and a well establiched ripe cold is to the germs of diphtheria what honey4s to the bee. The greatest menace to child life at this season cf the year is the neglected cold.” Wheth- er it is a child or adult, the cold slight or severe, the very best treatment that ean be adopted is to give Chamber. lain’s Cough Remedy. It is safe and sure The great popularity and im- mense sale of this preparation has been attained by its remarkable cures of this ailment. A cold never results in pneumonia when it is given.
