Clarke, of Meyers- dale, was one of the first volunteers to answer the call for assistance at Jacob's Creek, where a great mine explosion occurred last Thursday, killing about 200 employes. He was there when the first bodies were brought to the sur- face, but found the rescue work pro- gressing slowly. Mr. Clarke is from near Johnstown, and he claims that the bodies so far recovered at Jacob's Creek are not as badly burned as those killed in the Rolling Stock mine ex- plosion, near Johnstown, a few years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Rumiser, of Duquesne, Pa., arrived in town seyeral days ago to spend Christmas with rela- tives and friends here. Mr. Rumiser, however, was telegraphed for, Monday morning, to return to Duquesne at once, as something turned up to make his services almost indispensable to his employers at this time, and he complied with the request. We are sorry indeed that he couldn’t remain mas, and we know that his short visit was a disappointment to him and to them. Vin Baumgardner, Miss Harriet Haselbarth and Miss Bessie Miller, a sister of Mrs. E. E. Haselbarth, all figured in a sleigh up-set, last Friday evening, while returning from the Lichty school house, where Miss Hasel- barth teaches. In driving across the P. & M. trolley line, one of the sleigh runners slid some distance along a rail and made a noise that frightened the horse, causing it to run away. The sleigh was pretty badly damaged, but the occupants were merely spilled out, and not hurt.
