A timely note of warning comes from no less a personage than Ex-President Cleveland touching the popular clamor for regulating the railroad business of the country and the demand for re- strictive legislation touching public service corporations. He says: “There ie much of the nature of de- lirium in the popular outcry against railroad corporations, for instance. We shall all be ashamed of it by and by. I dare say I have some reason to know of the real iniquities of corporations, and I do know them ; but there is much that is not only groundless, but wrong, in the off-hand attacks made on the railroads by the thoughtless people on all hands. What is well founded in them will be cured, but the craze of denunciation will soon pass. “We shall reflect that railroads are vitally related to our prosperity, and to attack them needlessly is to attack ourselves. It is not the stock of soulless millionaires, but the property of citi- zens, of widows, and orphans. whose savings are} invested in railroads, that is being damaged. We shall re- call what railroads have been and are still to be in the development of our country, and this craze will pass. “Of course there must be some form of governmental supervision, but it should be planned in a quiet hour, not in one of angry excitement.” The Same Vacant Look. An old woman was being questioned by a lawyer as to how a testator had looked when he made a remark to her about some relatives. “Now,how canl remember? He’s been dead two years,” she answered, testily. “Is your memory so poor that you can’t remember two years back?” he persisted. The old woman was silent, and the lawyer asked: “Did he look anything like me?” ; “Seems to me he did have the same sort of vacant look,” responded the witness. The lawyer had no further questions to ask her. The Billmeyer Lumber Company as Sized Up by the Marine Journal of New York. The Billmeyer Lumber Company, of Cumberland, Md., which is composed of young men well known in Salisbury, is getting quite an enviable reputation among lumber dealers. The following appeared in a recent issue of the Ma- rine Journal, a paper devoted to the improvement of the Merchant Marine, the Navy, rivers, harbors and kindred interests: H. D. Billmeyer is the general man- ager of the Billmeyer Lumber Com- pany, of Cumberland, Md., in which he has associated with him his two broth- ers, Frank and A. H. Billmeyer. Mr. Billmeyer was born in Pennsylvania, and comes of a long line of ancestors of lumbermen located at various times in Lewisburg, Pa., and Womelsdorf, W. Va. The company now doing business in Cumberland, Md., was organized in 1897, and a considerable boundary of very fine oak timber was purchased and mills constructed thereon, pains being taken to have special facillties for the manufacture of long, heavy oak. The success of the initial venture of these young men was due to close ap- plication to their business, so marked that in 1803 they decided to embark in the wholesale lumber trade, as well as in the manufacture of the same, and at present are operating two mills and have probably unequaled facilities for the manufacture of oak for ship, boat and dock purposes. Through being descended from lum- bermen and having filled every position in the business, thus giving them a thorough knowledge of the trade, these young men owe their rapid advance as one of the leading lumber manufactur- ing firms of the country. For the past four years they have catered especially to the boat and dock trade at this port, and have met with unlimited success, as shown by the fact that they have as customers for oak ship timber some of the largest and most reliable ship- building and repair plants in New York city and along the New England coast, among whom are the Fore River Ship Building Company, James Tregar- than, Sons & Co., New Jersey Dry Dock “If there is a pitiabe sight in the world, it is that of a man with the executive ability, sagacity, and fore- sight to make a clean fortune, yet using his energies and abilities in mak- ing a dirty one,—a fortune which de- nounces and condemns him, and is a perpetual disgrace to himself and his family. “The right ought to thunder so loudly in a man’s ears, no matter what the business or transaction in which he is engaged, that he can not hear the wrong or baser suggestion. The highest service you can ever render the world, the greatest thing you can ever do, is to make yourself the largest, completest, and squarest man possible. There is no other fame like that,—no achievement like that.” THE DOCTOR AWAY FROM HOME WHEN MOST NEEDED. People are often very much disap- pointed to find their family physician is away from home when they most need his services. Diseases like cramp colic and cholera. morbus require prompt treatment, and have in many instances proved fatal before medicine could be procured or a physician sum- moned. The right way is to keep at hand a bottle of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. No physician can prescribe a better medi- cine for these diseases. By having it in the house you escape much pain and suffering and all risk. Buy it now; it may save life. For sale at Miller’s Drug Store. 8-1 ar Stevens Double Barrel Shotguns. The late Theodore Tilton, who boast- ed that he had never had a pipe, cigar or cigaret in his mouth, used to declare that the most inveterate smoker he ever knew was Sojourner Truth, the famous freedwoman reformer and lecturer. He was wont to tell how one day, when the venerable dame, then about 90 years old, was on a visit to his house, she sat smoking her pipe by the chimney corner, when George W. Bungay, the author of several eloquent anti-tobacco tracts, called to see her. “Aunt Sojourner,” he said, “I revere yous character, but I deplore your smoking, for it will keep you forever out of heaven.” “Lawkes, honey, how 80?” she asked. “Because, aunty,” he rejoined, “you know that, according to the Good Book, nothing entereth there that de- fileth. Now, how do you expect to get into heaven with your breath defiled by tobacco?” “Lawkes, honey,” answered the old negress, ‘when I go to heaven I ’spect to leave my breff behind me !”—New York Tribune. power, Were Members of the Same Church. Bishop Kemper was the victim of a holdup one night when he was the only passenger on a western trip. The driver told the road agent, who had covered him with a six shooter, that his only passenger was a bishop. “Well,” said the robber, ‘wake up the old man. I gant to go through his pockets.” When the bishop was aroused from a sound slumber and realized the situa- tion, he gently remonstrated with the man behind the gun. He said: “Surely you would not rob a poor bishop. I have no money worth your while, and IT am engaged in the dis- charge of my sacred duties.” “Did you say you were a bishop?” asked the road agent. “Yes, just a poor bishop.” “What church?” “The Episcopal church.” “The you are! the church I belong to. may pass on.”—Selected. Why, that’s Driver, you Telling the Truth. A worthy squire had a cow that al- ways kicked and reared when milked. He decided to get rid of it, and, calling one of his farmhands, told him to take the animal to market. “Sell the brute,” he said, "but mind you, tell no lies. I've been unlucky in my purchase, but that’s no reason why I should deceive others.” Two hours later the man returned from market with a larger sum than the squire expected. “I’m sure you lied about that cow,” he said. “Not a bit of it,” replied the man. “Every time I was asked if shef was a good milker I.simply said: “You'll get dead tired of milking before you’ve got all her milk.” They asked no more questions, so that I didn’t volunteer any more answers.”—Bon Vivant. Was It Possible? A minister who was waiting for a train was beguiling the time by talking to a half-witted boy. “IT say,Jamie,” said the “were you ever at school?” “Yes, sir, sure enough.” “And who had the honor to be your schoolmaster?” “Maister Black, sir,” replied Jamie. ~ How strange! Why, Mr. Black was my schoolmaster also.” For a moment Jamie was silent, then said, looking straight at the minister: “Mon, who'd ha’ thocht old Black could ha’ turned oot twa like us?” minister, OLD PAPERS for sale at THE STAR office.
