Vogel and his aged mother have moved to Berlin, from whence they came to Salisbury about 27 years ago. John is one of the most picturesque citizens we ever had in this vicinity, and as a local politician he had any other man in Elk Lick township “skinned” to a finish. Smith, a well known citi- zen of Ralisbury, died at his Union street, at about 9:30 o'clock, with dropsy and an affection of the liver for the past few. months. Deceased was the eldest Inte John Smith, who was a merchant and manufacturer in Salisbury from 30 to 40 years ago. De- ceased also followed merchandising for a number of years, both in Ralisbury and in Uniontown, Pa.. but retired from that business about twenty years ago, since which time he was engaged in the life and fire insurance business. He was married three times. First to Miss Adaline Livengood, a sister of S.D and Jacob D. Livengood; next to Miss Nancy Johnson, of Fayette county, Pa., and last to Miss Jane Thompson, of Lavansville, Pa. The first wife died marriage, and the second wife died about 20 years ago. The third wife survives him, and he. is also survived by two daughters, Annie and Sarah, who are both daughters of the second wife. Deceased was 58 years old last Sun- day, and up to a few months ‘ago he bid fair to at least reach the allotted three score ‘years- and ten. from the time his last illness started, he failed rapidly, yet his friends did not expect his death to take place so soon or so suddenly. Mr. Smith was a man of energy and activity all his life, and while he had his faults; ds we poor mortals all have, he also had his share of virtues.
