The Christmas tree has supplanted the Yule log and the mistletoe, but this is because of its being more common and convenient, and of the decree of the little ones, who would rather go wild over its beauties than marvel at the mysteries of time-honored usages. This has been an unusually busy month at THE STAR office, so much so that the job printing department has been requiring practically all of our time. On job printing we broke all previous monthly records. We thank our numerous friends and patrons for keeping us so busy, and we trust that they will pardon all the enforced short- comings on the paper. We must take care of a job printing harvest when it is ripe, for the harvests are not always with us. A man with a sprained ankle will use a crutch, rest the ankle and let it get well. Victor Wil- liams is holding a position with the Cambria Steel Company. Probably even middle-aged people of the day think the Christmas tree has been common here for many, many years; but in reality it is hardly thirty years since we adopted this feature of the day. Half a eentury ago it was only foreigners that made use of it, children of Americans knowing it only as a pleasant myth. And England in the second quarter of the last century considered the tree still a German in- stitution, as not yet fully belonging to her; today the English-speaking na- tions vie with the Germans in love for the tree. In olden times, confounded with the Epiphany, it was celebrated in the months of April and May. In the fourth century, however, St. Cyril, of Jerusalem, succeeded in obtaining from Pope Julian I an order for ascertain- ing the exact day of Christ’s nativity. The great theologians of the time took as a basis the tables of the censors in the archives of Rome, and established the day which has prevailed ever since.
