Rural free delivery has made it un- profitable. A considerable number of our people attended the County Teachers’ Insti- tute, at Somerset, thie week. Many re- port it the best institute they ever at- tended, and all agree that Rev. Sam Jones is a “corker.” Last Monday C. H. Knox met with a very painful accident in Meager’s mine. His leg was caught by a fall of coal and bruised in & most horrible manner. Eis injuries are not of a dangerous nature, but very painful. 1t is difficult to cure a cough or free yourself from the discomforts of a cold unless you move the bowels. Bee's Laxative Honey and Tar acts on the bowels and drives all cold out of the system. For Croup, Whooping-Cough, Colds, and all Lung and Bronchial af- fections, no remedy is equal to the original Bee's Luxative Honey and Tar. A Liquid Cold Cure. Hoblitzell, of Meyersdale, has sold its holdings in that section to the Standard Oil Company for a figure believed to be $300,000. The property disposed of consists of leases of several thousand acres in Eastern Illinois on whieh there are many good wells now in operation. Mr. Hoblitzell was one of the originators of the oil develop- ments in the territory referred to. Manager Levi Lichliter, of the well known S. A. Lichliter store, has made quite an improvement by remaving his old private office from the grocery room, thus enlarging it and greatly im- proving the same. He has a very snug business office further back in the building now, and he has also added a fine typewriting machine to his office equipment, of which bis daughter, Almira, is the operator. The Lichliter store is one of the top-notchers of Southern Somerset county. Backache is never known to those persons who take an occasional dose of Pineules. The value of the resin ob- tained from the Pine tree has long been recognized in the treatment of diseases of the bladder and kidneys. One dose of Pineules will give relief, and one bottle will cure. Sold by Elk Lick Pharmacy. 12-1 M. C. Lowry has decided to go to Mobile, Alabama, for the benefit of his health. He will likely start next Mon- day, and we hope to see him come back a well man. About four years ago “Mike” was told by a physician that he had consumption, and the same doctor said he could not live more than about three months. But he is living yet, and the last doctor consulted says he has catarrh of the stomach. Lately his condition is considerably improved, and there is now a fair prospect for his recovery, we are glad to say. A well-dressed man who, however, is evidently not well up in modern busi- ness practices, entered the Farmer’s National Bank, the other day, and asked to have a check cashed. When the paper was passed to Clerk Glen Shaffer, it was returned with the re- quest that it be indorsed. After spend- ing considerable time at the desk on the outside, the customer returned wiih the following notation on the back of the check: “I hereby indorse the sentiments written on the opposite side of this check. Yours truly, Blankety Blank.”—Punxsutawney Spirit. Croupis quickly relieved, and Whoop- ing Cough will not “run its course” if you use the original Bee’s Laxative Honey and Tar. This Cough Syrup is different from all others because it acts on the bowels. You can not cure Croup and Whooping Cough until you rid the system of all congestion, by working off the cold through a copious action of the bowels. Bee's Laxative Honey and Tar does this, and cures all Coughs, Croup, Whooping Cough, etc. No opiates. Sold by Elk Lick Pharmacy. 12-1 Mine Foreman Grant Watkins has resigned his position with the Somerset Coal Co., as foreman of the Chapman mine, to accept a position as foreman of the mines at Shamrock, about two miles north of Rockwood. Mr. Wat- kins is a competent man in his position, and during his residence in Salisbury, which covers a period of about one year, he made many friends who will regret to see him move away. He will move his family and household effects next week. We understand he is to be succeeded at the Chapman mine by Wm. P. Cochrane, another most excel- lent mine foreman. Some interesting school statistics ap- pear in a booklet recently issued by County Supt. Seibert. According to figures given, education costs less in Boswell borough and more in Ogle township than in any other school dis- tricts in the county. The cost of each pupil per month is only 95 cents in Boswell, while in Ogle it is $2.10. Mey- ersdale ranks next highest in cost per pupil, the same being $2.08 per month, and Wellersburg the next lowest with a cost of $1,00 per month per pupil. In Salisbury the cost per pupil per month is $1.11. In most of the districts of the county the cost per pupil per month is between $1.30 and $1.75. Windber spends the most for teachers, exceed- ing Meyersdale by $963.62, and the number of pupils in Windber is 1,085, while in Meyersdale it is 878. It is very apparent that in point of populsa- tion the big coal town in the north of the county has far outstripped Meyers- dale. and, therefore, Windber ‘is the real metropolis of Somerset county. MAN’S UNREASONABLENESS is often as great as woman’s. But Thos. S. Austin, Mgr. of the “Republi- can,” of Leavenworth, Ind., was not un- reasonable, when he refused to allow the doctors to operate on his wife, for female trouble, “Instead,” he says, “we concluded to try ElectriciiBitters. My wife was then so sick, she could hardly leave her bed, and five (5) physicians had failed to relieve her. After taking Electric Bitters, she was perfectly cured, and can now perform all her household duties.” Guaranteed by E. H. Miller, druggist, price 50c. 12-1 Wabash Evidently Intends to Enter Somerset County. For some time a large party of Wa- bash engineers worked in the vicinity of Connellsville, and now the same men are running lines in the vicinity of Confluence and working eastward. There is little doubt that the Wabash will build a line parallel to the Pitts- burg division of the B. & O., and what makes this belief look all the more reasonable is the recent purchase of the George’s Creek & Cumberland rail- road by the Wabash. The purchase of the road named will enable the Wa- bash to get an outlet through the Cumberland Narrows, and there is lit- tle doubt that the road was purchased with that end in view. Attention is respectfully called to the fact that quite recently we have found that rice hulls are used in Pennsyl- vania to adulterate feeding stuffs. Rice hulls are of very inferior value, containing nearly 40 per cent. of woody fiber and a large amount of silica or sand. The outer surface of the hull is harsh and rasping, while the edges car- ry sharp projections which have a ten- dency to irritate the digestive tract of animals, and if fed in quantity, may cause their death. Rice hulls are, there- fore, of little value as a food, detri- mental to the health of farm animals and sometimes even dongerous to their lives. So far, rice hulls have been found as an adulterant of wheat bran only, but they may find their way into mixed feeds and standard goods. Every dealer should be on his guard against this grossly fraudulent practice, and for the sake of his reputation, should refuse to handle rice hullsor any feed which is adulterated with the same. In buying feeds from the manufacturer or jobber, the dealer should be sure that the amount of protein and fat is guar- anteed, and also should demand a written guarantee that the material is not adulterated in any manner. Every feed dealer in the state should value his reputation. He is responsible for selling adulterated goods and for any injurious effects caused by feeding materials which he handles. This Department hopes for the co- the quality of our feeding stuffs may be improved. N. B. CRITCHFIELD, Secretary of Agriculture. F. D. FuLLER, Chemist. A LIQUID COLD CURE.
