John Arnold, of Holsopple, Pa.,in re- mitting for Tur Star, says: “I with pleasure renew my subscription to THE Star. 1 think it has the right name, and it shines brighter than ever. Rockwood Rural Free Delivery Route No. 2 has had many vicissitudes since it was called into being by the govern- ment more than two months ago. Several “eligibles” have heen appoint- ed carrier, and all have declined up to the latest information. Joseph Hauger began carrying the mail Monday over this route, and it is hoped he will be a stayer. Itis claimed that much of the time the roads have been so badly drifted that the trip over either of the Rockwood routes could not be made» and the carriers complain that patrons have not assisted in keeping the roads passable, as they are expected to do, and as the postoflice department de- mands that they do if the routes are to be continued. —Rockwood Gazette. “Joshua Simpkins” will be the at- traction at Meyersdale, Pa., Saturday, Feb. 25th, in the new Donges Theatre. It is said to be a well written pastoral play, with an interesting plot, the story being a happy blending of sunshine and shadow. The situations are said to be strikingly realistic with an over- flow of fun and amusement. There are seven comedy parts in addition to that of Uncle Josh, which character is a whole show in itself. A sensational novelty is introduced in the third act, in the shape of a realistic saw-mill scene, in which a monster circular saw is used, and which is said to actually saw through real timber. A fine and the best Cough Syrup. 3-1 Does advertising pay? The surviving veterans of the Civil war have been fittingly, though pathet- ically, called “the disappearing army,” as about one hundred are now dying every day, on an average. Last year the mortality of our soldier pensioners was 31,278, of which 30,071 were volun- teer soldiers of the Civil war. As these veterans are, with few exceptions, now above sixty years of age,the death rate will increase rapidly from year to year, and not many years hence the great army will all have disappeared from the activities of life, says an exchange. We know of two families that had about all their goods packed up to move to Michigan, but a day or two ago the wives received word from the husbands that they would not move. More money is being made by the non-union miners of the Elk Lick region, even at the prevailing price, than the great majority of union men are making who send in aid from any of the western states or from the Altoona, Pa., district. The men who have found work elsewhere, know it, too. The same attraction will appear in the Salisbury Opera House, Wednesday evening, March 1st. Doesn’t it make you weary to read the Chicago press, who are repeatedly ridiculing the country papers on their locals? Those two-by-four lunch- counter fiends think it awful funny when some country newspaper says: “Hiram Slocum has sold his Holstein cow to Ed Childress.” But, of course, it is just the proper caper when they gay, “Mrs. Franklin Oliver Lowden has just returned from the Epsom Lorimer kennels.” Oh, that’s great! That bull pup would bring about thirty cents in the dog pound, while Slocum’s cow would sell for. $50 in the dark.
