An item credited to “exchange” is go- ing the rounds, as follows: There never was a paper in any lo- cality that gave all the news. It is often that some persons come and go that the editor does not see. It hap- pens that a family is missed several times. They get the impression that the paper does not care to mention them or has a sp: e¢ against them. It is a mistake The paper has no ill feel- ing, nor spite, nor enmity against any- body. Most people take the local pa- per. Don’t be afraid to give the editor news of interest. Perhaps you think the paper shows partiality ; but try and see if we don’t treat you well if given a chance. Not well written, but the writer meant well—even toward people who otherwise ‘do not believe in‘ advertis- ing.” Only a few weeks ago a citizen who once told the Journal that “advertising is no good,” complained that a trip he had just made to a point in New York was not mentioned, while that of “a young lady to Cumberland was ex- ploited in six full lines.” The moral seems to be—advertising is worthless when it costs something, and worth something when it costs nothing. —Frostburg Journal. New Postage Stamps. A new set of designs for the United States postage stamps of the series of 1902 is being prepared at the bureau of engraving and printing in Washing- ton. A new stamp will be added with a value of 13 cents to facilitate the foreign register letter business. In the new series the stamps will have an arch over the picture, with the words, “United States of America” and will supplant “United States postage.” The word postage will appear at the bottom before the denomination value of the respective stamps. A picture of Grant will be printed upon the 4-cent stamps instead of that of Lincoln, which will be given the 5- cent stamp, upon which the likeness of Grant. now appears. Martha Washing- ton will appear upon the 8-cent stamps instead of Sherman, while the new 18- cent stamp will bear a likeness of Ben- jamin Harrison. The $1 black stamp will have the head of Farragut instead of Commodore Perry, as at present. The remaining denominations will re- main unchanged. The special delivery stamp will carry representation of a messenger mounted upon a bicycle, and will be printed in red, instead of a messenger running. The new MecKin- ley postal cards are now on sale. Lingering Summer Colds. Don’t let a cold run at this season. Summer colds are the hardest kind to cure and if neglected may linger along for months. The corned beel hash which was the feature of breakfast given at Senator Hanna’s home in Washington to Presi- dent Roosevelt and other m#fgnates was greatly relished by the guests, and has become famous. The recipe for preparing it is as follows: Equal parts of boiled prime corned beef and pota- toes are cut into tiny cubes. A small onion is minced to add favor, and the bottoms of the dishes are rubbed with a head of garlic. Another garlic head is wrapped in a piece of fat and thorwn into the center of the mass. is then mixed thoroughly and nicely browned in a big skillet or frying pan. During the operation disks of Bermuda | onions eut so that each round every ring of the onion are thrown into a deep dish of pure lard and browned delicately. When these disks are crisp they are used to garnish the edge of the platter, and the hash is served garnished with parsley or herbs and a squeeze of a lemon. There is lobster a la Newburg, which some people think is great; And terrapin’s a dainty cater’s plate; There are many pleasant dishes for the man who has the cash, But there’s nothing that quite equals Han- nah’s famous corn beef hash. for the cultured We have heard of old Lucullus, who was famous in his day For the spreads he gave the Romans—they were wonderful, they say! But the daintiest dish never gave his grate- | ful guests to share, For he didn’t have the Hannah hash upon | his bill of fare.
