Love making in those days was apt to be interruped by the sudden crack of the rifle and the ping- ing of a bullet on the door post. They were stirring days of danger, stern hardship and frequent tragedies. Through this border life, with its shooting affrays and fierce fights, Alice of Old Vincennes moves like a being from a world of her own. She is a fascinating character to those who compare her with the modern girl. And yet her prototype could be readily found in those strenuous pioneer days. Here is a synopsis of the opening chap- ters of the book: Alice Rousillon is introduced to the reader. She is described as a tall, lithe girl at play beneath a cherry tree with her foster brother, Jean, the hunchback. They are interrupted by Pere Beret, the parish priest. Gaspard Rousillon, the adopted fath- er of the children, a stalwart French immigrant, had taken the two waifs and had given them a home. The girl was of Protestant parentage, but her guardian, a devout Catholic, had refus- ed to interfer with her religion, much to regret of the good priest. After chiding the children for their rough play Pere Beret was told that a quantity of alcoholic liquor had just reached Vincennes. He made no sign of approval or disapproval, but as he sat on the doorsill of his home thinking of it, a letter was handed him. The continuation of the story will be found in the Sunday North American. & WEDDING Invitations at Tur S1AR office. A nice new stock justre- ceived. tf. Mr. Romily, the British Commission- er for the Western Pacific, tells this story of the early days of the Fiji set- tlements: “A white man, wandering over one of the islands, was taken prisoner by the natives. He had a cork leg. He didn’t like the looks of his captors, and liked them still less when he noticed that they were fixing up a neighboring oven. Trying hard not to show his agi- tation, he called for something to eat. Food was set before him, and he used his large jack-knife to cut it. “With every mouthful or two he stuck his jack-knife into his cork leg with such force that it stood erect. The natives looked on with great astonish- ment and evident alarm. After the meal was over he began to unscrew his leg. That was too much for the sav- ages, who did not seem to have any curiosity to see what he would do next, but opened a passage and let him walk away. “When he reached his horse, some little distance away, the natives began to gather around, but after mounting, the anan made a motion as if to un- screw his head, and the spectators ran away in terror.—School and Home. Uncle Dan’l Conneway caught three hundred mountain trout on a recent fishing trip to the headwaters of Blue Devil creek. Quite a number of them were over a foot long. Another mem- ber of the party caught a Missouri River pickerel about four feet long. It lapped three times around the fish basket and its tail sticking in the bait can. It flopped out of the basket and fastening its teeth in the man’s hunt- ing shirt, jerked him backward over Black Water Falls and got away in the Whirlpool Rapids. The man swam out and still lives to tell the story, says a Garrett county exchange. We are now ready to hear from John Hawn. Need More Help.
