THE INTERNATIONAL SILVER Meriden, Conn. “Silver Plate that Wears,” For 18 years the Democratic party has known but two candidates for the Presidency. When it isn’t Cleveland. it’s Bryan, and when it isn’t Bryan it’s Cleveland ; and the poor old cracked pitcher is getting weary of going so often to the well and coming back empty.—Greensburg Star. Tre action of President Roosevelt in reappointing Mrs Catharine Endsley postmistress nt Somerset borough will meet with the approval of a great ma- jority of the patrons of the office. Her appointment, which was made origin- ally by President McKinley, was gen- erally recognized as his personal selec- tion, and it would have been a great disappointment to the many friends at Somerset of the deceased president, as well as Mrs. Endsley. if a change had been made at this time. The political friends of Mr. R. S. Scull made an earnest but unsuccessful effort to have him appointed instead of the present official. —Somerset Standard. War are “Somerset county Mug- wumps??’ Those who fuse with the Democrats and none other. Several thousand “Magwumps” voted for W. H. Ruppel, the Democratic nominee for President Judge, in 1901, as against Francis J. Kooser, the Republican can- didate. They have probably learned by their action that fusion is useless among “the frosty sons of thunder” and that there are enough straight Repub- Yas, Oh, Yasseree! Quaysylvania stands a very good chance to change its name to Patsylva- nia. Quay has been running the state, but Pattison has carried it twice. The Quaykers are quaking while the people are patting Pattison.—Queen City Cou- reer. Yas, fer to be sure they're patting Pattison. Just now the patting israth- er gentle, but the patting he will get on election day will be very hard on the seat of his pants. Yes, they will pat him, and bat him, and dead-cat him, and swat him, and rot him, and bump him, and thump him,and kick him and lick him until he’ll ery out: “Is this me or not me, or has the devil got me? I’ve been talking throug' my hat, and I dunno where I'm at; but I kinder ’spicion Matthew Stanley’s at the bat.” Yas. Pattison carried the state twice, so she did ; but this time all old Matt. will need to do is to say: “Penny- packer trunk and send her back up Salt River.” And it will be done, a good many Democrats helping. Very Remarkable Cure of Diar- : rhoea. “About six years ago for the first time in my life I had a sudden and severe attack of Diarrhoea,” says Mrs. Alice Miller, of Morgan, Texas. “I got temporary relief, but it came back again and again, and for six long years 1 have suffered more misery and agony than I can tell. It was worse than death. My husband spent hundreds of dollars for physicians’ prescriptions and treatment without avail. Finally we moved to Bosque county, our pres- ent home, and one day I happened to see an advertisement of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy with a testimonial of a man who had been cured by it. The case was so similar to my own that I concluded to try the remedy. The result was won- derful. I could hardly realize that I was well again, or believe it could be so after having suffered so long, but that one bottle of medicine, costing but a few cents, cured me.” For sale by E. H. Miller. ol We Admire J. Pierpont Morgan for this Great Truth. Whatever may be said of J. Pierpont Morgan, it must be admitted by all sensible people that there is much in the man to be admired. He recently delivered himself of the following opin- ion on the popular gambling game call- ed Draw Poker, which is sometimes re- ferred to as the typical American na- tional game: “Draw Poker is not a game charac- teristic of the American people. It never was. It never will be. It is licans there to pull the ticket through, despite a combination of Democrats. | soreheaded Mugwumps, Prohibitionists, etec., as was formed last fall. The straight Republicans won hands down, as they always will, against any com- bine that could be formed agains them.— Fayette Republican. THE North American says of Patti- son: “He is weakest where he is best known. Organized labor is against him. Philadelphia Democracy is against him. The men who have seen his vas- cillating course in recent years, his willingness to compromise with evil forces, give no welcome to his nomina- tion. Distrusted by Independent Re- publicans, incapable even of inspiring the full confidence of Democrats, fail- ing to measure in integrity or ability the equal of Judge Pennypacker,Robert E. Pattison stands as the impersona- tion of a reckless, fatal candidacy. He is doomed to defeat, and as he falls he will carry deeper into the mire of dis- repute the faithless, futile Democracy which he unhappily leads.” esr BuracEess Fred Groff, of Berlin, was a Somerset visitor on Thursday, attend- ing to business matters in the afternoon and driving home in the evening. Mr. Groff is a radical Prohibitionist and is the party’s chairman in Somerset coul- ty. He admits that the prestige of his party has been somewhat weakened by the action of a majority of its members, last fall, when they voted the Demo- cratic county ticket against the Pro- hibition nominee, but says that will not occur again. The Prohibitionists will take a new track, he says, and hereafter their efforts will be executed with a purpose of increasing the Prohi- bition vote. Prohibition alliances are being formed over the county and the members of them will circulate pledges among the voters asking them to pledge themselves in writing to' support the Prohibition ticket in the fall.—Somer- set Standard. One of the Common People. Waynesburg Messenger. J. A. Berkey, the Republican nomi- nee of Somerset county for Congress, paid Waynesburg a flying visit last week, coming in via the evening train, Wednesday, and leaving on the after- noon train of the following day. Mr. Berkey is a very pleasant gentleman, and made quite a number of acquaint- ances here during his short stay. No False Claims. The proprietors of Foley’s Honey and Tar do not advertise this as a ‘sure cure for consumption.” They do not claim it will cure this dread complaint in advanced cases, but do positively as- sert that it will cure in the earlier stages and never fails to give comfort and relief in the worst cases. Foley's Honey and Tar is without doubt the greatest throat and lung remedy. Re- fuse substitutes. E. H. Miller. based upon a lie. The man who has l the greatest capacity for deceit wins. | To become a strong poker player he | studies to develop the most ignoble { and most un-American faculty. The | effect upon boys is to make them think ! deceit and bluff are smart and essential | to success in work as well as in play. | It is an iniquitous game and ought fo | be abolished. Nothing could be more | foreign to American ideas. The man who labeled it our typical national game ought to be shot. I never heard it referred to by that term without wanting to shoot him.” ~ What fair-minded, honorable man wal] not agree with Mr. Morgan in the hion so vigorously and concisely ex- ressed? Mr. Morgan does not believe in deceit, bluff or hypocrisy in any- thing, not even in his gigantic combi- nations of capital and organization of trusts. It is truthfully said of Mr. Morgan that he accomplishes none of his giant tasks by deceit or trickery, but works in the open. The North American has the following to say concerning the great financier, and all fair-minded and well posted men will admit that it is the truth: “Who ever heard of J. Pierpont Mor- gan wrecking a whole railway system, as Jay Gould was wont to do, in order to bring it within his grasp? Morgan builds up, Gould tore down. The Gould method is what Morgan brands as a game of bluff. A play with a fale hand. A mere pretense instead of hon- est merit. Men were deceived into the belief that a pair of duces were four aces.” When Other Medicines Have Failed take Folkey’s Kidney Cure. It has cured when everything else has disap- pointed. E. H.
