Perhaps the largest rattlesnake ever killed in this county, and, in fact, the largest one ever known in this section, was killed on Meadow Monntain, near the lumber camp of Kimmell Bros, 1sst Friddy, by J. H. Wilt and B. H. Bittinger, employees of Kimmell Bros. The snake measured 10 feet 8% inches and had 36 rattles and a button, indi- cating that ic was about 40 years old. The hide and rattles are on exhibition at the camp, and the truth of the story is vouched for by two reputable gentle- men whose varacity cannot be ques- tioned.—Oakland Journal. A Real Friend. “1 suffered from dyspepsia and indi- gestion for fifteen years,” says ..T. Sturdevant, of Merry Oaks, N. C. “Af- ter I had tried many doctors and medi- cines to no avail one of my friends per- suaded me.to try Kodol. It gave im- mediate relief. I can eat almost any- thing I want now and my digestion is good. I cheerfully recommend Kodol.” Don’t try to cure stomach trouble by dieting. That only further weaknes the system. You need wholesome, strengthening food. Kodol enables you to assimilate what you eat by digesting it without the stomach’s aid. E. H. Miller. A Farmer Editor. The editor of one of our exchanges is also somewhat of a farmer and in a re- cent editorial has this to say: The newspaper is an editor’s farm. The reading space he sells to subserib- ers at so much per year. The adver- tising is cash rent space to merchants who cultivate it to their own liking. If he were to grant a “potato patch” free to every one who is in need of one he would soon have no land left for him- self, and the charitable institutions whose members are seldom found on a subscription list, would, sooner or later, be compelled to appreciate the fact that an editor’s “God bless you!” does not pass current as a circulating medium on Saturday evening when the hands of the office must be paid. Let us as- sure “charitably” inclined citizens that it is bad taste to be continually asking for “potato patches” from a newspa- per which they do not patronize them- selves and which they have to borrow or steal to find out whether their re- guest has been complied with. The conclusion we wish to arrive at and the impression we wish to make is that a newspaper is a real, live business in- vestment—a stiff proposition—which could not keep its head above water for twenty-four hours on faith and love, nor for a minute satisfy its hands on pay day with the glorious promise of a happy hereafter. a We have a numberof very handsome family records for framing, size 18x22 inches. They are worth 75 cents apiece, but while they last, from this date we will present one to every subscriber who calls at the office and pays at least a dollar on his or her subscription. All those who have favored us with cash on subscription on or before Jan. 1st, 1902, are invited to call for records, but we cannot send them by mail, as they can- not be sent without being crushed.
