It was the firet and most desirable point of vantage coveted by both the Federal and Confederate armies. In May, 1861, the four Federal advance columns concentrated at Parkersburg. W. Va., Wheeling, W. Va., Harper's Ferry, W. Va., and at Washington. To retain the advantage, the Federal gov- ernment established block houses along the railroad from the Monoecacy to the Ohio river, besides forts at Winchester, Harper’s Ferry, Cumberland, Piedmont and New Creek (Keyser). The B. & O. was the base of operations for the I'ed- eral army for nearly four years and from which the government could not take advance line earlier than Noven- ber, 1864. The B. & O. was the means of communication between the West and the Army of the Potomac, and was consequently in a continual state of seige. Harper's Ferry, the key to the Shenandoah Valley, first famed through the fanatical attempt of John Brown.in defying the laws and customs of his country, was captured or recaptured eight times in three years. The Gov- ernment Arsenal and armories which were located there, were destroyed by the government to prevent their cap- ture. ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-NINE BATTLES OF GREATER OR LESS IMPORT- ANCE WERE FOUGHT ON OR ADJACENT 70 THE BALTIMORE & OHIO RAILROAD, not taking into consideration the innumer- able skirmishes. A sad tragedy occurred at Somerset, last Sunday evening, when a 12-year- old son of James McKelvey accidental- ly shot Donald Bricker, a playmate, with a Flobert rifle. Young McKelvey was showing his gun to his companion, when it was accidentally discharged, ball the entering young Bricker’s mouth. When the wounded lad fell, young McKelvey saw the blood run- ning out of his mouth, and supposing that his companion was dead, he ran into the house, reloaded the gun and purposely shot himself through the brain, expiring almost instantly. The ciler lad was only slightly wounded, and will recover. The hanging of Milt Sheets is sup- posed to be responsible for young Mec- Kelvey’s suicide. It is alleged that some time after Sheets was hanged.the McKelvey boy and some other lads were talking about the affair, when, it is alleged, the boy made the statement that if he was ever so unfortunate as to kill anyone, he would promptly kill himself to avoid being hanged. It is supposed when he accidentally shot his companion he feared the fate of a murderer. and to avoid disgrace and farther sorrow, took his own life. The affair is one greatly to be regret- ted. Traveling is Dangerous. Constant motion jars the kidneys which nre kept in place in the body by delicate attachments. This is the reason that travelers, trainmen, street car men, teamsters and all who drive very much suffer from kidney disease in some form. Foley’s Kidney Cure strengthens the kidneys and cures all forms of kidney and bladder disease. Geo. H. Hausan, locomotive engineer, Lima, O, writes, “Constant vibration of the engine caused me a great deal of trouble with my kidneys, and I got no relief until 1 used Foley's Kidney Cure.” Sold by EK.
