That dog poisoners are at work in
this community is an evident fact. Some
time ago some miscreant poisoned a
nice, harmless little pet dog for Rev. L.
A. Hazlett, and this week a dose was
administered to Chas. R. Haselbarth’s

Jack, as he was called, suffered great
agony until Tuesday afternoon, when

From several different sources we
learn that Baltimore & Ohio railroad
surveyors for the past few days have
been surveying a route for a new coal
road to connect with the Pittsburg di-
vision at Sand Patch, thus doing away
with a haul of about six miles. From
the eighteen or twenty miles now in
peration along the Salisbury branch:
tbout 260 cars of coal are shipped daily.
All must be hauled to the junetion and
hence to Sand Patch. The new road
will branch off from the Salisbury
braueh about three miles south of Mey-
'rsdale, making almost a direct line to
Sand Patch. This is the report from
various sources, as we have said, but
whether the rumor is correct remains
0 be seen.

License to Drink,
The state of Oregon has hit upon a
device to make men sober that would
delight Woolly himself. Every man
who drinks has to take out a license
costing him $5 a year, and unless he is
armed with the document he cannot be
served with liguor at any hotel or sa-
loon. Every six months the names of
all persons who take ont a license are
to be published in the papers so fh
the public may know those who are
authorized to drink.— Lanark (Iil.) Ga-
zette.
Oregon certainly has some peculiar
laws. Aside from its new drinking
law, which may or may not de a good
one, it also has a law in regard to citi
zenship that is different from that of
any other state. It is not generally
known, but it is nevertheless a fact.
that Oregon is the only state in the
Union where a negro cannot gain citi-
zenship. The colored man is not only
prohibited by law from becoming «
citizen of Oregon, but lve is also debar-
red from becoming a resident of that
state. Oregon is strictly a White man’s
state.

Representative-elect John P. Me-

which he will introduce at the coming
measure
session of the Legislature. It will es
tablish a pension fund for teachers in
the common schools who have served
for twenty years or more. The meas-

State appropriation for the common
schools going into the pension fund
which it will establish. This appropri-
ation for 1889 amounted to $5,500,000,
this year to 5,000,600. If the
bill to be introduced by Mr. MeTighe
were now a law there would be for this

gine, in its plunge, grazing the office
where he was busily employed at his
desk. No trainmen were injured.
Major P A. Shaffer, chief engineer
for the W. K. Niver Company, spent
Sunday in the city. From him we learn
that it is the Niver Company that has
purchased the 15000 acres of coal land
options that were held by Berlin parties
on a tract in Brothersvalley township.
He now s three surveying corps on
the ground, and in a few days he ex-
pects to have three more at work. If
ihe weather will permit he expeets to
have his part of the work along so that
in about sixty days he can commence
locating shafts, for the company are
anxious to get these mines opened up
18 soon as possible. They now have
two Diamond drills at work, and they
will have two more on the ground this
week, making test borings. Severul
young men of this city have been given
work with the surveying corps by Mr.
Shaffer.
