BEATTY'S PIANOS AND ORGANS. Hon. Danfel F. Beatty, the great Organ and Piano manufacturer, is bnilding and shipping more Organs and Pianos than ever. In 1870 Mr. Beatty left home a penniless plow-boy, and by hig indomitable will he has worked his way up 80°as to sell xo far, nearly 100,000 of Beatty's Or- gans and Pirnos since 1870. Nothing seems to dishearten him; obstacleslaid in his way, that would have wrecked any ordinary man forever, he turns to an advertisement and comes out of it brighter than ever. His Instruments, as is well known, are very popular and are to be found in all purts of the world. We are informed that during the next ten years he intends to sell 200.000 more of his make. that means a business of $20,000,000 if we average them nt $100 each. They that t Mr. Andrew Carnegie and his associates at Homestead have been engaged in an industry pro- . | tected by the tariff, and because = dispute 7. | a8 to wages has arisen between the em- . | ployers and employed. protection is re- sponsible for the Homestead murders and mischiefs. In Congress, 100, certain persons who suppose themselves to be Democrats have ingisted upon this view. If strikes were never heard of in un- protected industries, if. in fact. the great- est strikes in the country had not oceur- red in unprotected industries like the steam railroads and the horse railroads, if free trade England were not a country of strikes and if all these facts were not known to everybody with education enough to read large print, these assump- tions might be worth contradicting. As the case is, they are so farfetched and wildly absurd that we fear they will bring discredit upon the Democrats in the na- tional campaign. This is not a question of partisan poli- tics; it is deeper than that, for it goes to the very heart of social order and the preservation of all tuat has been won for civilization. The Democratic politicians and the newspapers that are trying to obscure the real questions are doing all in their power to injure the Democratic party.” Note This Contrast. ' TWO OF A KIND. The Congress shall ‘have power to lay and collect taxes, duties and excises for revenue only necesearv to pay debts, pro- vide for the common defense and carry on the Government of the Confederate States; but no bounties shall he granted from the treasury: nor shall any duties or taxes on importations from foreign na- tions be laid to promote or foster any branch of industry.—Article 1 of Confed- erate Yobatiintio, Adopted March 11. 1861. We denounce the Republican Proto tion as a fraud: a robbery of the great majority of the American peorle for the benefit of the few. We declare itto he a fundamental principle of the Democratic party that the Federal Government has collect Tariff duties, except for the pur- pose of revenue only, and we demand that the collection of such taxes shall be limited to the necessities of the Govern: ment when honestly and economically administered. —From Tariff Plank of the Democratic Platform, Adopted at Chica- £0, June 22, 1802. How They Obtained Rain in a Central American Province. A newspaper of New Salvador prints a number of resolutions promulgated by the principal alcade of the town and de- partment of Castanas. They are as fol- Jows: **Considering that the Supreme Creator has not behaved well in this province, as in the whole of last year only one show- er of rain fell, that in this summer, not- withstanding all the processions, prayers and praises, it hus not rained at all, and consequently the crops of Castanas, on which depend the prosperity of the whole department, are entirely ruined, it is de- creed: Article 1. If within the peremptory pe- riod of eight days from the date of this decree, rain does not fall abundantly, no one will go to miss or say prayers. Article 2. If thé drouth continues eight duys more, the churches and chapels shall be burned and missals, rosaries and other objects of devotion shall be de- stroyed. : Article 8. If, finally, ina third period of eight days it shall not rain, all the priests, friars nung and saints, male and female, will be belieaded, and for the present, permission is given for the com- mission of all sorts of sin, in order that the Bupreme Creator may understand with whom he has to deal.” The most remarkable feature of this affair is the fact that four days after these "resolutions were passed the heaviest rain- fall known for years was precipitated on thie burning community. port of the Government, for the discharge of the debt of the United States, and for the encouragement and Protection of manufactures, that duties be laid on im- ported goods, &c.—From Preamble of Firet Tariff Act. signed by George Wash- ington, July 4, 1789. Congress has repeatedly and not with- out success directed its attention to the encouragement of maifitfactures. The object is of too munch consequence not to insure a continuance of its efforts in every way which shall appear elligible.— From George Washington's speech to Congress, dated December 2, 1796. We believe that all articles which can- not be produced in the United States, ex- cept luxuries, should be ndmitted free of duty, and that on all imports coming into competition with the products of Ameri: can lahor there should be levied duties equal to the difference hetween wages abroad ‘and at home.—From Republican Platform, Adopted at Minneapolis, June 10, 1892.
