Broadwater paid a visit to Cum- berland last week. Rev. A. L. Gnagey and family attended the German Baptist love feast, at Aeci- dent, last Saturday. Chas, B. Very nice and warm the last few days. * Corn is receiving its first plowing now. Bake Johnson is putting up the wall for D. 8. Beachy’s barn. John Baugh- man is doing the carpenter work. Henry Miller is putting up a wagon shed for Rudolph Yoder. €. J. Folk and 8. 8. Miller are the only ones who are at present burning lime for wheat land. C. T. Lee is this week opening the new road. He is the chap to open it, as he will do it right. David Byler’s father, from Lawrence county, Pa., is here visiting friends and relatives. Sam Loechel lost a Percheron mare and colt, recently, and J. D. Brennaman lost a Clydesdale mare and colt. caused by the mares not being able to foal. team. R. M. Beachy has succeeded in selling four hay loaders, on condition that they work as recommended. Elijah Liven- good, M. D. Yoder, E. D. Hershberger and D. J. Swartzentruber are the pur- chasers. There is a good joke out on D. J. Swartzentruber and his incubator. He was going to have lots of chickens and turkeys, hut here is how the thing panned out: Out of 51 turkey eggs he got 8 turk- eys. and out of 43 chicken eggs he got 17 chicks. I hate to tell on Dan, but it can’t be helped. D. 8. Beachy is about in the same boat, as he got but 15 chicks out of 100 eggs. JANUS, June 14th, 1892. Arthur, Ill. Planting corn is the order of the day. Some are done, while others are not more than half done. Wheat is in heads and clover in bloom. Strawberries are plentiful. Apples are about the size of a hickory nut. Cherries are gefting ripe, what few there are. The farmers greatest delight now is the fine weather we have been having for the last week. N. Beachy is done planting corn and can now go fishing until the other farm- ers catch up with him. Dan Brisky had been confined to his bed with malaria fever, but is recovering. Chris Youtzy is convalescing slowly. Jonas Beachy and family are at home again from Newton county, Ind. They report wet weather in Newton county and say that the farmers are not near done planting corn. 8. Yoder and wife, who had been in our locality for a few weeks, have re- turned to their home in Holmes county, Ohio. TN Rev. Moses Beachy, of Ohio. is among us at present. On Ascension day he preached a very interesting sermon in Dave Beachy’s dwelling house, at which place the Amish held communion services on that day. We learned in your last issue of the marriage of our well-known friend, Al- bert Stanton, to Miss Laura Loechel. -We wish them a long and a happy life. Some of our young folks talk of visit- ing the great Barnum show, which is to be at Decatur, June 16th. The young folks had ‘‘a singing” at Jake Brisky’s last Sunday. Quite a crowd was there—about thirty boys and twenty-six girls. We are very much interested in some of the items that appear in your paper, especially the State Line and Midland, Va., items.
