FOUND DEAD IN BED. ■R. ■KNHY BCHBHKR'S SVDDBN DBATB YESTERDAY MORNING. A Bother Death Bolaltlng from Kspsrl •aaM la the Flood—The Awful Scenes Nightly Reappeared and Caueed Sleep lessness—'The Fatal Remedy. Mr. Henry Beherer (or yeare before the flood resided on Portage street, opposite the Gautier Works. The family con aiated of Mr. beherer, his wife, three daughters, and a *<>n. The flood of May 31, 1889, swept their home away, and Mrs. Scherer and two of the daughters. Emma, aged twenty-three years, and Mary, aged eleven, were drowned. The bodies hare not been recovered. After the flood Mr. Scherer got to bearding in Cambria borough, and the past two or three months was at the bouse of Mr. John Miller, No. 820} Cbest aut street, now the Sixteenth ward. For about two months be has not been at work, having been afflicted with rbeumu tisra. He formerly worked at the Gau tier Works and later in the blacksmith shop of the Cambria Iron Company. On Saturday he came up to the central part of the city and drew some money out of the bauk and called at Dr. Zim merman's drug stoie about 2 o'clock p, M., and asked for something to make him sleep. He told the doctor he was not able to rest at night, and frequently saw many of the terrible sights wltnes-ed at the time of the flood. During the nights be imagined he beard his wife and chil dren calling for him to save them. The doctor- put up some chloral and bromide of potassium in a two-ounce bottle—about one hundred and twenty grains of chloral. He told Mr. Scherer to take a teaspoonful of it before retiring • and if be did not go to sleep to repeat the dose every three hours. He cautioned bim about the use of the drug and wrote the directions on the bottle in German. After he returned to Cambria he paid some small bills he owed there, and is believed to have gone to his room about 0 o'clock in the evening. Between 10 and 11 o'clock Saturday night Mr. Michael Weiz, aged about twenty two years, who boards at the same house and occupied the same bed with Mr. Sherer, retired to his room. He says about 3 o'clock Sunday morning Mr. Shcrer got up and went to the window and then got back to bed. In the morning ho was awakened at 7 o'clock and found that Mi. Sherer was dead. The bottle that had contained the chloral was found empty sitting on the window-sill. It is thought that he was unable to sleep and that the visions of the great flood were appearing before him, and that in the hopes of getting sleep and rest he drank the con tents of the bottle. Thirty or forty grains under ordinary conditions would be enough to kill a man. Twenty-five years ago Mr. Scherer had a shoemaker shop on Clintou street, on the present site of the Conemaugh Valley Furniture Company, aDd was considers J at that time an expert workman. He was a native of Klinern, Prussia, and came to this country over thirty years ago. He was aged fifty-six years last August. About twenty-six years ago he was mar ried to Miss Catharine Fox, who, as was mentioned, was drowned in the flood. A daughter and a son survive ; the daugh der, Miss Lena, is employed in Mr, Bcott Dibert's shoe store, and makes her home with her aunt, Mrs. A. Dangis, a sister of the deceased. The son, Harry, has made his home with his aunt, Mrs. Martin Fox. on Centre street. Mr. Fox was drowi ed in the flood and was a brother of his i mother. There are also surviving him a sister, Mrs. Henry Kurtz, of Baltimore, and a brother, Carl Scherer, of Evansville, Indiana. Mr. Bcherer was a member of the Ger man Lutheran Church and the Harmon ie Singing Society. The funeral wiU take place this afternoon, at 4 o'clock, Irom the residence of Mrs. A. Danges at 00 j Market street. Death of Capt. W. ii. Jonen' Motlier-in-Law* Braddock Dally News. Mrs. Mary Ann Lloyd, mother of Mrs. Charles Robertson and Mrs. Capt. W. R. Jones, departed this life at the age of eighty-two years, after a long and painful illness, at the residence of her daughter. Mrs. Charles Robertson, Stewart avenue, North Braddock. Wednesday, April 16th, a 4:30 o'clock. Mrs. Lloyd was born 1807, in Tipton, .Staffordshire, England. She came to this country in 1850 with lic r mother. Her father and two sisters pre ceeded them two years, settling in Bos ton, Mass. About 1854 Mrs. Lloyd and her husband went from Boston to Potta ville,Pa.,where, with two other capitalists, he built the Fishback mill, now the Potts ville Steel Works, and becoming disgust ed with the management of the mill, they returned to Boston in 1862. From there they removed to Johnstown, Pa., and from there they came to Braddock about fifteen year ago. NOTHING could more completely demon strate the great change in the drinking habits of the American people than the simple official statement, recently issued, that the production of beer in the United States had increased from 8,383,720 bar rels in 1875 to 25,098,765 barrels in 1889. As the small imports and exports of malt liquors nearly balance each other, they need not be taken into account. The figures indicate an average annual con sumption of little less than a half barrel of beer to each head of the population. A car loaded with ore jumped the track while being hauled toward the weigh scales below the works yesterday, and the engineer not noticing the disaster did not stop the train until the car was com pletely wrecked.
