The Democrat. FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 1890. The January Century. In the January Cent ury, the next to the last installment of " The Life of Lincoln ' appears. This installment contnins a graphic account of Lincoln's last day and his assassination, also a chapter on the fate of tlie assassins and a description of the mourning pageant. There is a por trait of Andrew Johnson, a diagram of the box in Ford's Theatre, a fac-simile of a playbill found in the President's box, a picture of the funeral-car and of tlie mon ument at Spiingiield. Supplemcnluiy pa pers by other hands are printed on the pursuit anil death of Joint Wilkes Booth The hitler by two Confederate officers who met Booth and ilerold in theirflighl, andliy a Union officer who commanded tlie cavalry that captured the fugitives. Tlie frontispiece of this number of The Century is a portrait of Professor jnines Bryce the author of " The American Commonwealth." Accompanying the portrait is a sketch of Professor Bryce's life. A notable paper is Miss Amelia B. Ed wards' account of tlie recent very extra ordinary discoveries at Bubnstis in Egypt. One stone of these ruins is almost sixty one centuries old, and Bubastis is as an cient as the earth itself used to he consid ered. All tile monuments reproduced in this article are now for tlie first time pub lished. A very fill! installment ol Jefferson's Autobiography gives some amusing tales of the early adventures of the author. Jefferson uiso describes the elder Boolh's acting of Sir Giles Overreach, and he lulls of that eccentric knight, the aetor Sir Win. Don. There are also descriptions of Julia Dean, James E. Murdoch, and llenri Placide; and the installment closes win, a brief essay entitled, " A play is an Ani mated Picture." The installment is pro fusely illustrated. OKACfc It. no.-K, Johnstown,' Pa., December 80, task. Auditor. M-St-w Til K EAVTHCDMAPI'KAKKD. Part of a I'iuih)lvhiiluu Town Drop" Into a Mine. A disastrous cave-in cf the earth's sul fate occurred on Friday afternou in the town of Plains, near Wilkesburre. The affected pasts covered an area cf 130 square yards and is situated in the slope of a hill. The beautiful Catholic church of the Sacred Heart stands^ light in the middle of the caved-in portion. Adjoin ing it is the residence of the pastor, Father Phillips ; to the south is another budding, the home of the sisters of char ity ; on the opposite side are the resi dences of tieury .Masters and Evan Evans. About four o'clock the crash came. At lirst the earth seemed to sink gradually and then there was a collapse. A report rent the ait, which was heard for miles. People ran out of their houses, thinking it was an earthquake. Father Phillips was in the library when the report came. He was thrown from his chair and the bookcase toppled over on him. He was slightly injured. When the priest recovered from his fright lie found that the front portion of his rcsi ddnco was ten feet in the ground and lia ble to drop into tne mihe at any moment. He rushed up stairs to his mother's room only to find that the old lady had been thrown out of her bed. She is an invalid, [t was with difficulty that she was taken out of the house. Dishes were thrown oil the tables and the plastering on all the rooms was knocked off. The house is a complete wreck. Loss, SIO,OOO. Some plumbers were at work in the church when the cave-in took place. I'heir lirst intimation of danger was the falling of the plaster in huge blocks. George Keller was struck by a falling beam from the belfry ami seriously hurt. The church is past repair. The front part is down nine feet. James Keyes' family had a narrow es cape with their lives. The cellar dropped into the mine 350 feet, leaving nothing except the house standing and one side foundation wall. .Mrs. Keyes hud just come out of the cellar. Lizzie Keyes was thrown against the stove and badly burned. The i a'th in the main toad went down about fifteen feet. There is great excite men' in the neighborhood. The loss l' property will reach SIOO,OOO, the Cu •" lie Church congregation losing SOO, (MJ of litis amount. Inmates of the wrecked" uses ueie given shelter elsewhere ai rht.
