A GIGANTIC RAINFALL WAS UXUOMITEULY TIIE CAUsK Of THE RKCKNT MsASTKOI'S AoOIW. All Average "f KlgUt Ini'litK Kf'H Ovtir hu Area >f More 1 haw 19,000 .-qua re Allies in the State—Neai !y ?,000,000,00,1 Tons In Weight. Secretory of Inlet no I Affairs Stewart has issued a report relative to*llie recent floods in Pennsylvania, caused by the rainfall of May 80th, to June Ist. It was, guys the report, a gigantic ruinfall, amounting to an average of eignt inches in depth of water, failing on an erea of more than 12,000 square miles, and cover ing the mountain pleatettu and its eastern declivities from Johnstown toHamsburg, and extending northward from Somerset to AlcKcan and Tioga couulii s. This area o. rainfall was oval in form but broader toward the north branch of ttie Susquehanna. Around this central body of flooded country the quantity fell off rapidly to six, four and two inches, although iho highlands in Man land and Virginia, at the south, nod in noiiheust Pennsylvania and southern New York had flooded rains of three to live inches iu depth. MTTI.U RAINFALL IS l'l'lTSUl'ltOH. At Pittsburgh there was only one and a half inches, although in Ohio, Michi gan and Indiana, nearly three inches of rain fell on the 2!) th and 00th of May. There were flooding ruins at the same time in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. In the sontneru counties of this State the rainfall was light, from half an inch to an inch only, although the southeast gale was more violent there, and it swept Delaware and South Jersey with great force on May 81. The appalling losses of life at Johns town, of course, could ltot have resulted from any storm, however great the rain fall, yet it was apparent at Philadelphia on the afternoon of May 80th, and dming all the following day, that the great heat and violent gale indicated a heavy rain fall in the interior of the State. Taking the entire area visited by heavy and general rainfall May 28th to June Ist, there is NO RECORDED EXPERIENCE approaching it in magnitude. In eastern Kansas and over much of Missouri, it reached an average of three iuches. In Illinois and nil the States intervening to the quantity varied from two to four inches ; the observers of the several States' weather systems reporting very fully. All their reports have been received and consulted, in writing and paper. The States southward, including Ten nessee. had general and heavy rains nearly equal to those just referred io. And, while in the Ohio Valley and vicinity of Pittsburgh there was less rain, the first mountainous elevations eastward wore deluged with rain, the southern border having several destructive local storms or cyclones, such as are characteristic of the southern border of an urea of general disturbance. WEIGHT OE THE WATER. The vast weight of water falling is shown by a calculation based on the weight of a cubic foot, thirty-five feet be ing a ton. In the surface of a square mile there would be 0(5,377 tons for an inch in depth, 531,010 tons for a depth of eight inches. The quantity falling on 12,- 000 square miles, at this rate, is 6,732,- 3-40,000 tons. The force exercised tv vast - bodies of water in motion is irresistible. In concluding, the report says : '• Iu all respec's the conditions were the most remarkable and peculiar of those knowu to attend a general rainfall, and the vast masses of water thrown down over the surface ot several States other than Pennsylvania, only add to the diffi culty of explaining the origin of the storm, or the source from which so great a body of water can have been derived." ! ♦ ♦ I.ctter Frum Franca. Mr. S. M. Harter. Secretary of the Y. [ M. C". A., has received the following letter I from Paris, and we are allowed to pub- : lisli it : Paris, August 5, 1880. Mr. s. M. Hurler, General Secretary M. C. J., I John*to\cn. I'a, I My Dear Brother: The hearts of our French young men, like those of so many [ others, have been profoundly touched by | the terrible tales of suffering and death | that have come to us from your city, and ; we have wished to send to your Aasocia- ' tion a little token of sympathy and broth- j erly love. Our young men are not' very well off, and the amount we send is not large, but it is sent with much love and with many I prayers for your prosperity in future. i Our French boys feel that they have re- j "eived much from Association workers in j America and send the sum enclosed also I as a slight token of their gratitude. Yours in His name, <4. Yandhr Bekex, F. A. Qaylord. A Public Nuisance, Dnmkeness bus bosomc so common on ! our streets that it is SupossiMe to go out of doors without seciM men staggering ; on the pavements. This is a crying nui- j sance to our people and a source of much I odium to our city. Strangers who daily visit us think that the drunkards are resi- 1 dents of this place, which, for the most : part, is not the case. They are the refuse - and skum of nearly every city in the ' aountry, who, from curiosity or avarice, or maybe both, have flocked about us like buzzards about a dead horse. Such offenders should get the extreme penalty ; of the law. No mercy [should be shown them, for besides the disgrace they cause us, they also injure our merchants, who j would reap rich harvests from the re spectable visitors who would come to see us were this crying nuisance abated.
