MONTOUR AMERICAN FRANK C. ANGLE. Proprietor. Danville, Pa., 112 eb. 2.1, IVOS. I LMIMASTER'S TALK ON ALGIERS Mr. Laumaster delivered the fifth of a series of addresses on his trip to the Holy Land in tha Y. M.'O. A. Hall yesterday afternoon, betoie a largo audience. After briefly outlin ing previous addresses he took up the afternoou s topio : "Experiences at Algiers." Mr. Lauma-ter opened the address with au account of the method adopt ed by ttie tourists' anent to euable the party to make the bo t use of their time on shore. SI p- wt r issued to the tourists containing information relative to the places about to be vis ited, and suggestions for the sight seers. The speaker first described the en trance to the city of Algiers. He spoke of the beiutiful I.arbor au t bay where their ship anchored . As is customary in places of this kiurl, mer chants soon thronged arouurt the boat trying to sell their wares to the tour ists. The party was taken to shore early in the morning and began their day of sight seeing They visited many points of interest in the quaint old city, being carried from place to place in carriages, which method afforded an excellent opportunity to gee tiie eutire city between stopping places. Among the places of interest visited was the great wall or breakwater, which was built by Christian slaves, over 30,000 being engaged three years in the work of building it. Other places visited were the citadel and the palace of the governor, the public library and museum, the famous resi dence portiou of the city, known as Mustapha Superieur. a number of the j mosques, the public gardens and | squares aud many of the pablic build- j ings. The view of Algiers from the bav i is most beautiful, the city being on a ; range of hills risiug in amphitheatre j form around an artificial harbor. The I buildings are principally white, and it is common to speak of the city as a "Diamond enclosed in au emerald," on account of its beautiful setting of green bills aud trees The city is ; divided into two parts. French Algiers and Arab Algiers. The French portion of the city is as gay as modern Paris 1 It Is fronted hv the B mUvard de la I Repoblique which is 3TOO fet t long and cost $15.00«0,000.00. Hire are I the fiuest stores, hotels and public buildings. In Arab Algiers tie streets are narrow, houses win lowlt ss and 110 ▼ehioles. Some of tlie streets are a succesuou of steps, it being nece-«arv i to mount as many as 500 on some of inclined highways. It was in the Arab quarter of the ; oitv that the party got their ilrst real glimpse of Oriental life. The popula- ! tion here is a mixture of Moors, Arabs, Bedouins, Turks, Romans and Jews The costumes of the inhabitants are j most striking, there being many veil- j ed women, and others whose ga'b showed that the party were in the midst of Oriental life. Tiiis Aran quarter is rapidly disappearing, how- ! ever, 800 of the old houses having bin destroyed in one year. It is ex- | pected that Algiers will soon be a, modern French city. The population j of the city of Algiers is 138,000. The climate is equable throughout the eutire year, and at all times is most j delightful. It is a very popular health resort for many. A yoodly number of the people ate engaged in paidening ani artisan employments. There are viueyards, palm trees, beautiful pri vate gardens aud everywhere the veg etation is most luxuriant. The city has a system of ebctric cars, and al-o has a steam railway that runs into the interior. There are good roads, schools and churches. The prevailing style of arohiteeture is Moori-h with many modern buildings. In conclusion Mr. Laumaster said that he hoped that the series of ad dresses would result in awakening a deeper interest in missionary work. The Pneumonia Season. Coughs and Colds in cbildien as well as adults are frequently dangerous at this season of the year, aud a little precaution now may save much trou ble, worry and expense. Kennedy's Laxative Honey and Tar, a combined cough and cold enre— a new scientific discovery in medicine—is a certain cure for Coughs, Colds, Croup, Whoop* iug Cough, etc. The coughs aud colds are cleared out of the system by gent ly moving the bowels, and at the same time the throat, chest, aud bronchial tubes are so strengthened that there is little probability of dan ger. Kennedy's Laxative Honey and Tar is plea-ant to take. Contains no opiates. Sold by Pauh'S & Co. WK3T HEMLOCK TOWNSHIP. School Directors—A. D. Cros-ley. R.. 17; Jacob Umstead, R , 22; Thomas Oething.
