Boy Confesses He and Ernest Haines
Killed Latter’s Father.
Charged with the murder of his fath-
er, Ernest Faines, aged eighteen, is in
jail at Punxsutawney. In an adjoining
cell Ward Mattern, Haine's eighteen:
year-old chum, is’ held on a similar
charge. Members of the state con-
stabulary, who arrested them at
Sprankles Mills, declare that Mattern
has made a full confession of the
crime, telling them how they waylaid
William Haines in a railroad cut near
his home and blew off his head with a
shotgun. Robbery was the motive.
Haines left his home at Sprankles
Mills to go to the village store, a mile
and a half distant. He had a large
roll of mon. y. Some time later his
cold body wa. found in a railrod™ cut
py William Wyant.
“He loaned me the gun and I did
the shooting,” Mattern is said to have
declared. “He always took a lot of
money when he went to the store and
we wanted it.”
