Charged with the murder of his fath- er, Ernest Faines, aged eighteen, is in jail at Punxsutawney. In an adjoining cell Ward Mattern, Haine's eighteen: year-old chum, is’ held on a similar charge. Members of the state con- stabulary, who arrested them at Sprankles Mills, declare that Mattern has made a full confession of the crime, telling them how they waylaid William Haines in a railroad cut near his home and blew off his head with a shotgun.
